Lie with Me

Leila, Lauren Lee Smith, is a young woman who, after watching a pornographic film, discovers she can command attention and desire with ease, yet part of her remains guarded beneath a confident surface. Early in the story, a charged moment with David unfolds in a bathroom while his girlfriend Victoria, Polly Shannon calls from outside. She exits, but keeps her eye on him, and soon a separate, more raw encounter follows—Leila pursues a shy man outdoors while David watches from his car, as Victoria’s presence lingers nearby. Throughout this sequence, Leila remains in control, while David plays a largely passive part in the unfolding dynamics.

David notices Leila again on the street, and he follows as she remains elusive, smiling without a word. The chase leads them to a playground where their uneasy tension sharpens into a mutual curiosity; at one point he leaves, and Leila shifts focus to a different, isolated moment of expression with a shy man, a confrontation conducted in a public space while David observes from a distance. This initial spark seeds a complex attraction between them that will soon pull them into a real connection.

Leila returns to her daily life and visits her parents, where a few fractures surface: her mother is leaving her father and selling the family home, leaving her father devastated and largely inert. Around this time, Leila’s best friend Rachel, [Kristin Lehman], is preparing to be married and confesses she recently slept with an old flame, despite insisting she’s ready to settle down with her fiancé. Leila remains supportive and skeptical in equal measure, and the moment is intensified when Rachel discovers the porn tape Leila had been watching, though Leila says nothing about David. The tension between romance, sex, and honesty threads through their conversations as Leila and David begin to test the boundaries of their connection.

When Leila and David reconnect, he takes her home and they become intimate in a way that marks the start of a real romance. He asks if she will go out with him on a proper date, and she gives him her number. Their relationship deepens as Leila meets David’s father, a physically frail but humorous man who teases her about the noises of living in their apartment. David treats his father with tenderness, even as Leila remains wary. David’s ex-girlfriend Victoria corners Leila at her workplace to warn her about David’s intimacy issues, and Leila’s response is guarded, treating the warning as a test rather than a truth.

Back at the club, Leila dances with a couple of men to gauge David’s reaction, and he is hurt and angry when he feels used or objectified. He confesses that he thinks of nothing but her and fears losing her, begging her to promise she won’t leave him. Leila agrees, but her belief in that promise wavers, creating a fragile trust between them.

When David’s father dies, he seeks comfort from Leila, but she is unsure how to console him, triggering a conflict that ends with him asking her to leave. He later reconsiders, yet finds himself unable to locate Leila again, knowing only her first name. Simultaneously, Leila finds her sexual experiences growing less satisfying, returning to the shy man only to explode in anger when he cannot comply with her commands, throwing him out of her apartment in disgust.

As summer wanes, Leila spends time with her parents as they move through their own changes, preparing for a wedding. She rides her bicycle toward the ceremony, and David, ever watchful, follows in his truck. Outside the synagogue, he waits among the crowd until the moment the newlyweds exit. When Rachel helps Leila find her footing and Leila calls out to David, they face the possibility of a future together. At the reception, David watches Leila dancing with an older man, and, unable to bear the distance any longer, he follows her all the way home. This time, he stays, and Leila lets him in, promising—not with certainty, but with a vow—that he will not be left again. They share a fierce, undeniable kiss, sealing their renewed commitment in a moment that feels both risky and inevitable.
