When Night Is Falling

Camille Baker, played by Pascale Bussières, is a university literature professor working at a religious college, where she is navigating her long-term relationship with her colleague, Martin, portrayed by Henry Czerny. Their relationship is under pressure from the university’s expectations, especially since they are being groomed to succeed the current chaplain, with subtle hints that marriage might be a requirement for their advancement. Camille, however, finds herself questioning these traditional views, especially when she refuses to denounce homosexuality during an interview and struggles to answer questions about how she would advise a male student attracted to another man. Her discomfort and resistance suggest she is grappling with her own identity and the constraints placed on her by her environment.

The story takes a turn when Camille’s dog runs away and is found dead on the street. Overcome with emotion, Camille ends up crying in a laundromat, where she is comforted by Petra, a vibrant circus performer played by Rachael Crawford. Later, Camille discovers her laundry was mixed up with Petra’s, and while returning Petra’s clothes, she learns about her new acquaintance’s unusual lifestyle and talents. Petra’s boldness and openness shock Camille, especially when she expresses a desire to sleep with her. Confused and unsure of her feelings, Camille quickly leaves, but Petra isn’t one to give up easily. She later tracks Camille down and sends her an arrow with a picture of herself and her phone number attached, symbolizing her interest. Camille, feeling conflicted, invites Petra inside her home, and this leads to an unexpected kiss. Overwhelmed by her feelings, Camille runs away from the situation, but her connection with Petra begins to grow stronger.

As the narrative unfolds, Camille and Martin are faced with their own hopes and societal pressures. While Camille is reluctant to conform to the college’s expectations, especially regarding their potential marriage, her feelings for Petra are undeniable. Camille’s internal struggle is compounded during a hang-gliding outing with Petra, who encourages her to take a leap of faith before dark falls. Although Camille injures her knee during the flight, Petra cares for her, and their relationship deepens through intimate moments, including a sexual encounter that begins with a massage and quickly turns more passionate. Their closeness is interrupted when the university chaplain, played by David Fox, comes to visit. Camille, trying to protect Petra’s privacy, introduces her as an acquaintance but is caught off guard when Petra refuses to leave and she describes her as a “disturbed street kid.”

In a moment of vulnerability, Camille visits Martin, with whom she re-establishes a physical connection, but her mind remains preoccupied with Petra. Driven by her feelings, Camille finds herself back at the circus where Petra performs, sharing a passionate moment after watching her in her element. This relationship with Petra blossoms as they consider Camille potentially joining the circus community, a world far removed from her academic life. However, Martin, who returns from a trip, discovers evidence of Camille’s ongoing relationship with Petra—specifically a photo with her phone number written on it—and later observes Camille and Petra together in her trailer. He confronts Petra briefly, leaving her startled and scared by his anger.

Meanwhile, Camille plans to end her relationship with Martin, but he is already present when she comes home. Encouraging caution and reflection, he urges her to consider whether her passion for Petra will fade, emphasizing the stability of their relationship. This advice prompts Camille to spend time alone in the woods, finally burying her dead dog—a symbol of her grief and emotional burden—after having kept it in her fridge. Consumed by her sorrow and despair, she passes out in a snowbank, only to be found and revived by the hang gliders, Stuart Clow, Jonathan Potts, and Tom Melissis, who had joined her and Petra on their first outing. Petra rushes to her side in a desperate attempt to revive her, underscoring the deep connection they’ve forged.

In the end, Camille chooses to leave her old life behind and joins Petra and the circus on their journey to the festival Circumstance, where performers celebrate their craft and freedom. The circus director, played by Tracy Wright, who dreams of running away herself, stays behind, while Martin has a brief encounter with her outside a café, hinting at potential future crossroads. The film explores themes of love, self-discovery, societal expectations, and the transformative power of following one’s true passions, all woven through Camille’s emotional journey from conformity to liberation.
