Colonel William Ludlow, disillusioned by the government’s treatment of Native Americans, abandons his military career. Seeking a new beginning, he moves to the wilderness of Montana to start a ranch and care for his family.

At the ranch, Colonel Ludlow is joined by his three sons—Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel. Together with their friends, including One Stab, a Cree man, they experience a fulfilling life amidst Montana's natural beauty.

William's wife struggles with the harsh winters of Montana, leading her to make the difficult decision to return to the East. Before leaving, she asks Tristan to never mention her again, creating a heavy burden for him.

Samuel returns from Harvard with his fiancée, Susannah, ready to start their lives together. However, Susannah finds herself drawn to the charm of Tristan, which complicates their engagement.

As the wedding plans accelerate, Samuel shocks his family by enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force to join the fight in World War I. This decision creates deep disappointment for Colonel Ludlow.

Alfred leads a disastrous charge into no man's land, resulting in heavy casualties and him being injured. The grim consequences of war are felt deeply by the Ludlow family as they face losses.

Tristan is heartbroken when he learns of Samuel's death during a reconnaissance mission while visiting the field hospital. He gets to Samuel's side too late, holding his brother in his final moments.

Overwhelmed by grief, Tristan makes a reckless raid on German lines, an act that leaves his comrades shocked. His actions are driven by a desperate quest for vengeance after losing his brother.

Post-war, Tristan retreats into isolation while Alfred returns home only to be rejected by Susannah. The once vibrant ranch starts to fade with their unresolved feelings and deep sorrows.

As years pass, Tristan returns to Montana, rekindling a bond with Susannah over their shared grief. However, their connection is threatened by Alfred's conflicting emotions and impending departure.

Tristan falls in love with Isabel Two, building a family together, but their happiness is shattered when she is killed by a corrupt police officer linked to the O'Banion crime family. Tristan's world crumbles once again.

Furious over Isabel's death, Tristan seeks justice, leading to his imprisonment after confronting the corrupt officer. Despite his dire circumstances, Susannah's visit reveals her lingering feelings for him.

After being released from prison, Tristan teams up with Decker to hunt down those responsible for Isabel's death, including an O'Banion brother. This quest becomes a pivotal moment of action in his life.

The O'Banion brothers make a final assault on the ranch, prompting William and Alfred to protect their family. In the ensuing tumult, Tristan realizes the danger his children face.

In 1963, an aged Tristan embarks on a solitary journey into the wild, where he faces a grizzly bear in a fierce battle. This encounter symbolizes his life's struggles and ultimately becomes his moment of redemption.
