In 1820, an expedition led by Captain Filmore Henry, John Huston, has spent two harsh years trapping fur in the unexplored Northwest. Their aim is simple and daunting: reach the Missouri River before winter fully closes in, so they can sail south and trade the goods they’ve amassed. The journey tests them from the start: the land is unforgiving, the supplies scarce, and every decision carries weight as they push toward a distant line that marks the edge between survival and failure. Lowrie, a young trapper, hunts a deer and Zachary Bass, Richard Harris follows after it until he is mauled by a brown bear. Too afraid to intervene, Lowrie calls for Henry and his men to intervene, and the group eventually kills the bear, the violence of the wilderness revealed in a single brutal moment.

The expedition’s doctor, Ferris, Norman Rossington, tends to Zachary’s wounds and delivers sobering news: Zachary may not survive the crossing ahead. In a hard, ritual decision, Henry orders Lowrie and Fogarty, Percy Herbert, to bury Zachary if he is not dead by morning and to deliver a proper eulogy for a man who might already be gone. The two men remain by Zachary’s side as the caravan moves on, yet by dawn they have deserted him, assuming him dead, as Arikara scouts draw near. He traps a rabbit and uses its fur as an armpit cushion, a small, stubborn act of ingenuity that keeps him going. He also traps and skins a cougar for its coat, a quiet testament to his resilience in a landscape that offers little mercy. As winter tightens its grip, Zachary hides when a native couple approaches and watches as the woman gives birth—an image that echoes Grace’s own memory and the life that can emerge from a moment of danger. Grace’s presence in his thoughts is sharpened by the memory of pregnancy and loss, a reminder of what he fights to protect—even from afar.

During a tense night watch, Fogarty misreads a figure and fires, believing he sees Zachary; the shot instead destroys Lowrie, a grim twist that underscores how fragile life remains out here. The morning after, the expedition pauses at a frozen river and must shoulder the task of dragging the boat across the ice, a slow, exhausting segment that tests every member’s endurance and patience.

As spring edges closer, the party faces a renewed threat when natives press toward the wagon train. A gunfight erupts, and Zachary must push forward to help his companions. The native chief, recognizing him, steps in to halt the violence, blessing Zachary and returning his spear. The moment signals a fragile peace that shifts the balance of trust within the group. Back at the line of fire, Henry fears a repeat of bloodshed, but Zachary makes a decisive choice: he will not claim the rifle from Henry; instead, he goes toward his own son in the distant future. The decision is heavy with sacrifice, and the expedition, sensing the weight of his resolve, follows him as he steps away from the front line and toward a life that his body and memory can sustain.
