Let Him Go

In Montana, 1961, retired sheriff George Blackledge lives a quiet life on a serene ranch alongside his wife Margaret, their son James, James’s wife Lorna, and their infant grandson, Jimmy (played by the Hornung twins, Otto and Bram). However, their tranquility is shattered when Margaret spots James’s horse wandering alone and grows uneasy. Tragically, George finds James’s lifeless body by the creek after a fatal fall from his horse.

Fast forward to 1963, Lorna unwittingly marries her new partner Donnie Weboy, though it’s clear her heart is elsewhere. She clings to Donnie for the sake of their son, Jimmy. One day, while shopping, Margaret witnesses a disturbing scene where Donnie roughly grabs Jimmy’s arm after the child drops his ice cream. When Lorna intervenes, Donnie’s rage turns towards her, leaving Margaret deeply concerned. An attempt to check on Lorna leads to the discovery that she and her family have vanished without a trace. Fueled by desperation, Margaret resolves to rescue Jimmy, and though initially hesitant, George ultimately decides to join her on this perilous journey.

Their search leads them to a local sheriff, Sheriff Nevelson, who directs them to Forsyth, Montana. There, they meet a shop owner who hints they might find the Weboy family in Gladstone, North Dakota. Sensing tension, George is taken aback when he learns that Margaret has brought along his gun, but she insists it’s necessary. Soon after, they encounter a kind young Native American named Peter Dragswolf, who offers them food and shelter for the night, guiding them towards Bill Weboy, Donnie’s uncle.

The following day, George and Margaret meet Bill, who introduces them to Donnie’s mother, Blanche. Initially amiable, Blanche’s demeanor shifts dramatically when Lorna and Jimmy arrive. Her patronizing remarks and harsh treatment of Lorna reveal a darker side. Undeterred, George and Margaret meet Lorna for lunch and urge her to leave with them, but Lorna fears retribution from Donnie. After careful consideration, she agrees to make a break for it later in the night.

However, things take a dire turn when Blanche, Donnie, and Bill, along with Blanche’s other sons, Marvin and Elton, invade the Blackledges’ motel room. When Margaret confronts Blanche about Donnie’s abuse, a fierce confrontation ensues, leading to George brandishing his gun. Unfortunately, the situation spirals out of control as Blanche forces Donnie to inflict harm on George, resulting in a harrowing display of violence. After a futile battle, they leave, and the local officer informs George and Margaret that Jimmy now belongs to the Weboy family, suggesting they leave town for their safety.

Devastated, George and Margaret set off back to Montana, but their journey is halted when George’s condition worsens. They seek refuge with Peter, who shares his traumatic past of losing family, prompting Margaret to express her desire to be close to Jimmy. George, feeling utterly defeated, wishes to give up, leaving Margaret in despair over the loss of both James and Jimmy.

That fateful night, George takes matters into his own hands and returns to the Weboy residence. Armed with a shotgun, he confronts Donnie and is met with chaos. As George battles to retrieve Jimmy, a series of explosive events unfold—Blanche accidentally shoots Bill, leading to George’s heroic yet tragic struggle against Blanche and her sons.

Ultimately, George is mortally wounded, but in a climactic moment, Margaret seizes the shotgun and exacts vengeance for her family’s suffering. As dawn breaks, she and Peter escape with Lorna and Jimmy, although her heart aches anew for the loss of George. Yet, a glimmer of hope emerges as Margaret drives home with Lorna and Jimmy, knowing the child is finally safe in her care.
