In the year 1925, we follow Jimmy “Dodge” Connelly, the seasoned captain of the Duluth Bulldogs, a struggling professional American football team. As the future of pro football hangs by a thread, Dodge is resolute in his mission to revitalize the sport. He lures renowned Princeton football star, Carter “the Bullet” Rutherford—a celebrated hero of World War I—to join the Bulldogs, believing that leveraging Carter’s fame will bring prosperity to the game.

Meanwhile, Lexie Littleton, a sharp reporter for the Chicago Tribune, is tasked with uncovering the truth behind Carter’s supposedly heroic exploits. However, her investigation takes an unexpected turn as she finds herself entwined in a love triangle with both Dodge and Carter. One fateful night, Carter reveals that the German platoon actually surrendered to him by mistake, igniting a conflict when Lexie’s hidden motives become clear, including a kiss shared with Dodge.

As the publication of Lexie’s story creates a storm of controversy, accusations fly and Carter’s manager resorts to questionable tactics to suppress the truth, even going so far as to bribe witnesses. The efforts to salvage pro football grow desperate as the new commissioner, appointed by the U.S. Congress, establishes formal rules that stifle the game’s creative spirit while also tackling the growing scandal surrounding Carter.

Caught in the turmoil, Dodge devises a clever scheme, interrupting a private hearing in the commissioner’s office. He threatens Carter with a confrontation from his old army comrades who he claims are waiting just outside to commend him for his bravery. In a surprising twist, these so-called comrades turn out to be Bulldogs dressed in army uniforms. Facing the pressure, Carter finally confesses, leading the commissioner to release Lexie from the obligation of retracting her story. As a result, Carter must admit to receiving undue credit for his wartime actions and donate a considerable portion of his earnings to the American Legion, while his unscrupulous manager faces a lifetime ban from football.

As the final game approaches, Dodge finds himself on the field against Carter, who has switched allegiance from Duluth to Chicago. Tensions rise as both men vie for Lexie’s heart amidst an electrifying showdown. In a chaotic match where rules seem nonexistent, an unexpected twist unfolds. After a fierce brawl, Dodge cleverly disguises himself as a Chicago player, ultimately leading to a crucial touchdown that secures victory for the Bulldogs.

In the aftermath, Carter plans to reveal the true story of his time in the war, while Dodge presents an impassioned plea for the need for heroes in America. Ultimately, they part ways amicably, allowing for personal growth and reconciliation.

As the credits roll, we witness a montage of joyful moments: Dodge and Lexie riding off on his motorbike into the sunset, their wedding celebrations, and Carter’s generous donation of $10,000 to the American Legion, alongside his former manager now managing baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
