Helmut, an 18‑year‑old student, falls for classmate Britta and joins a peace movement to be near her. Britta suddenly moves to San Francisco, lives with her father and starts a new boyfriend. Back home Helmut studies literature and politics and dates a medical student from his former school, but they split after an affair with her roommate. He later has brief affairs with several women while still yearning for Britta.
