Lera leads a double life, studying human needs by conducting opinion polls during the day and working as a dancer named Gerda at night to financially support herself and her mother. Her family is struggling; her father has abandoned them for another woman and repeatedly returns home, creating turmoil. Her mother retreats into sleep to avoid the painful reality. Feeling lost and uncertain about the future, Lera observes the hardships of the world around her, finding it increasingly difficult to find hope or a way to improve her circumstances.
