In 1984, Elmeri Hautamäki escapes from the mental institution with his nurse Janne-Petteri Broman. They are joined by the Kagelberg twins, Jönssi and Dille, as they set out on a quest for the hidden gold treasure of Elmeri's father Kyrpä-Jooseppi Hautamäki. The escape triggers a pursuit by the institute's doctors Rasikangas and Kulokoski, and by the police.

The backstory centers on 1944 in Lapland, where Kyrpä-Jooseppi Hautamäki was killed by a deserting German Waffen-SS soldier named Peter North. Rumors speak of a chest of Third Reich gold hidden somewhere in Lapland. This legend becomes the engine of Elmeri's present-day quest and the danger that follows.

The fugitives' escape triggers relentless pursuit by the mental institution's doctors Rasikangas and Kulokoski, as well as by the police. They must dodge capture while trudging toward the promised treasure. The pressure mounts as squads close in from all directions.

They reach Elmeri's father's site, hoping the river will yield gold, but they find the riverbed barren of a practical fortune. The team recalibrates their plan, holding onto the legend while confronting reality. The setting's vast landscape underscores the scale of their quest.

In the dead of night, Jönssi stumbles upon a buried German motorbike and the bodies of two dead SS troopers. The motorbike's sidecar conceals a chest full of Third Reich gold, confirming the legend's real treasure. The discovery escalates the stakes for everyone involved.

With the motorbike unearthed, the group realizes the gold truly exists and now shapes their decisions. They weigh the moral and practical implications of handling Nazi treasure while trying to stay ahead of their pursuers. A police pursuit leads the group to the grounds of gay baron Eugen von Lahtinen during a poetry-themed spring celebration. The festive setting provides cover as they regroup and consider their next move. The baron's world contrasts sharply with the fugitives' grim treasure hunt.

The fugitives visit Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a gold exchanger who turns out to work for a secret Nazi organization. This connection reveals the broader Nazi network behind the treasure and foreshadows Peter North's return. The conspiracy thickens as North learns of Elmeri's find.

Peter North learns that Elmeri has found gold and returns to Finland to reclaim it. His presence rekindles the old threat and heightens the fugitives' urgency. The story returns to its roots as the 1944 killer re-enters the present.

When Elmeri/Hautamäki goes to exchange the rest of the gold for cash, he ends up in a hand-to-hand fight with North.
