Kiss of the Spider Woman

In the final act the film shifts from the cramped cell to a fleeting glimpse of life beyond the walls. After the warden finally grants Molina a parole, he returns to his ailing mother, sharing a quiet, tender dinner that briefly restores a normalcy he has not known for years. The reunion, however, is cut short when Molina is called to a secret meeting with the underground resistance. The rendezvous takes place in an abandoned cinema, a location that mirrors the fantastical movies he has lived through in his mind.

The meeting is ambushed; soldiers swarm the building and the resistance leader escapes in a car. Molina, caught in the chaos, trips and is unable to follow. As the authorities close in, a comrade fires two shots at him, not out of cruelty but to prevent Molina—who carries knowledge of the cell’s hidden conversations—from being captured and jeopardising the entire network. In his last moments, he drifts back to a childhood memory of sitting in a theater, imagining himself as the glamorous heroine he has always adored, a final act of imagination that gives him peace.

Back in the prison, Valentin receives a red scarf that Molina has left for him—a quiet promise that their bond endures. The scarred political prisoner uses the information he has finally managed to extract to contact the opposition. When the military dictatorship collapses in 1983, the doors of the prison swing open and Valentin steps out into daylight, clutching the scarf as a symbol of the love and courage that sustained both men. The film ends with the sense that, while Molina’s body is gone, his fantasy‑filled defiance and his willingness to sacrifice have helped bring down the regime, illustrating how imagination and affection can become acts of resistance in the bleakest of circumstances.
