We Won’t Grow Old Together

Jean Yanne, a cynical, middle-aged film technician, is six years into an affair with Marlène Jobert, Catherine, a much younger shop assistant, while his marriage to Macha Méril, Françoise, has long since fallen into routine and detachment. The film opens in the middle of one of their frequent arguments, where Catherine is exhausted by waiting for him to change, and Jean vacillates between affection, condescension, and cruel outbursts. Their life together unfolds in a pattern of impulsive trips, quiet dinners, and regular emotional breakdowns—mostly Jean’s—and the relationship keeps cycling: Catherine threatens to leave, Jean pleads for her to stay, and they settle into a fragile peace that soon fractures again.

Catherine begins to grow more independent. She visits her family, where she receives warmth and support, and she starts to imagine what life might be like outside Jean’s orbit. Jean, meanwhile, remains locked in his self-centered worldview—insisting he loves her, but unable to offer anything resembling stability or true commitment. The contrast between her rising sense of self and his evasive, unstable pattern casts a sharper light on the hollowness at the heart of their bond, making their cycles feel both intimate and increasingly untenable.

At one point, Jean does separate from his wife, seemingly making good on a long-standing promise. But Catherine no longer sees this as the simple escape she once believed. She begins dating a new man—kind, calm, and emotionally available—whose steady presence highlights Jean’s erratic behavior. In their final meeting, Jean tries to win her back, assuming that now that he’s “free,” Catherine will come back to him. But she refuses. She’s not the same person who waited by the phone, who begged for scraps of attention. Quietly but firmly, she walks away from the relationship—and from Jean.
