Vasanth, Prashanth, the son of a prominent industrialist in Coimbatore, heads to Chennai to enroll in an engineering college. There he clashes with Shankar, Karan, a short-tempered and formidable senior. Their first meetings are charged with hostility, but when Vasanth helps Shankar fend off a gang of ruffians, a tenuous bond begins to form and they gradually become the best of friends. Vasanth’s calm, humble nature provides a steadying contrast to Shankar’s wealth-fueled swagger, and Shankar is impressed enough to welcome him into a rare, supportive camaraderie.

Shankar’s home life is a quiet mystery to Vasanth. On receiving an invitation to Shankar’s house, Vasanth overhears Shankar’s mother asking why he invited visitors, a chilly reception that unsettles him and prompts a hasty exit. Over time, however, Shankar’s mother comes to understand Vasanth’s true character and grows affection for him, softening the initial distrust that shadowed their budding friendship.

In a parallel thread, Vasanth encounters a girl at the Coimbatore railway station who captures his interest. He pursues her with persistence, even as she appears reluctant. A misunderstanding with the police surrounding their relationship lands him in jail for eve-teasing, a turn of events that threatens to derail everything. The twist is that this girl is Priya, Shankar’s younger sister. When Vasanth is released, he chooses not to expose her role in his arrest to Shankar or his mother, and withdraws from her life, even as both come to realize that Priya loves him in return.

The couple’s path to happiness is tested as Shankar reveals a painful truth about a betrayal by one of his closest friends that shakes him to the core. A flashback unfolds, recounting a family secret: Shankar’s family also has another sister, Shanthi, and a wedding is arranged with Shakthi, a close friend. Happy anticipation gives way to heartbreak when Shanthi runs off to marry Shakthi, leaving Shankar and his mother crushed. In their distress, they disown Shanthi and grow wary of Shankar’s friends, which helps explain the wary tone Shankar’s mother once had toward Vasanth and why the past shadows the present.

Seeing echoes of that history in his own life, Vasanth resolves to place friendship above romance and to guard his ties with Shankar. Priya, however, refuses to give up, continuing to seek his love even as her family prepares her for an arranged match. In a desperate moment, she drinks poison and is rushed to the hospital. Boopalan, [Chinni Jayanth], a steadfast friend who believes in taking action, informs Shankar and his family about the depth of Vasanth and Priya’s connection and how Vasanth sacrificed his own happiness for the sake of his friendship. In a moving moment, Shankar confesses pride in their bond and gives his blessing for Vasanth and Priya to marry, sealing a complex tale of loyalty, love, and the weight of friendship.
