Lovers Courageous

In 1919 London, a spirited 12-year-old named Willie Smith is constantly told he has “too much imagination.” He skips school by forging a letter to the headmaster, claiming his father is ill and needs him at home. Willie’s father, Mr. Smith, is furious and even threatens to break “every bone in [Willie’s] body” if he continues to be “different from other boys.” Despite a brutal whipping at home, Willie refuses to abandon his dream of doing something uniquely his, a belief that sets the stubborn course of his life.

The story then leaps forward to the present, where an adult Willie takes to the high seas, the crow’s nest of a ship serving as his perch during a violent storm. He drifts from job to job—New York, Toronto, a hotel, and then a stint as a cowboy—always weaving tall tales about his exploits in letters back home. His mother, Mrs. Smith, clings to the hope that he’ll become a great man, while his father remains scornful, and his brothers assume Willie will never amount to much.

After a failed hotel gig in Canada, Willie quits and heads to South Africa, where his restless energy lands him in Simon’s Town. There, he meets Mary Blayne, a woman living on Admiral Percival Blayne’s base who is tired of the dull life around her. Mary chats with Willie in a shop where he’s recently been hired as an assistant, and a spark flickers between them. She’s quickly pulled into his world of big dreams, despite being engaged to Lord Jimmy back in England. Jeffrey, an officer who works closely with Admiral Blayne, notices Mary’s growing fascination with Willie, and soon he begins to suspect that their bond runs deeper than a casual flirtation.

As Willie and Mary spend more time together, Mary discovers that Willie is writing a play, and she urges him to chase that dream. She promises she’ll attend the opening night, no matter where life takes her. They rehearse scenes from the play, drawing closer as they improvise and reveal their ambitions to one another. Jeffrey’s suspicions intensify, and he confronts the couple, urging the Blaynes to keep their secret and perhaps send Mary back to England. Mary’s mother—Lady Blayne, played by Evelyn Hall—manages a painful ruse, insisting Mary accompany her to England for a supposed Aunt Margaret’s illness, pressuring Mary to return to a life of propriety with Lord Jimmy.

The moral tug-of-war of duty versus desire reaches a breaking point. Mary chooses to sail with her mother, even as Jeffrey accompanies them, and Willie watches the ship depart with a pain that feels like a life left unfinished. Once in England, Mary endures a loveless, gilded engagement to Jimmy; she drowns her unhappiness in late afternoons and social obligations, while Willie returns to poverty in England to continue writing. He sends a small reminder of her in the form of a cigarette box and a note explaining that he’s still “trying to write the play you believe I will.” Mary eventually finds his address and travels to see him again, confessing she loves him and acknowledging the sacrifice she made, even if it means breaking with the life she was groomed to lead.

But the drama intensifies when the Admiral tracks their every move. He pleads with Mary not to marry Willie and vows not to financially support them if she stays. Mary refuses to abandon Willie, and Willie, in turn, agrees to respect the Admiral’s demand for distance, though his heart aches. He confronts reality and agrees to leave her if need be, showing a stubborn, stubborn devotion that mirrors his younger resolve to choose his own path.

In a pivotal moment, Willie pushes his way into the office of a theater producer to showcase his life story. He encounters Gerald Lamone, a producer who is intrigued by the screenplay, while his partner, Mr. Belton, dislikes the premise, calling it unbelievable that a well-born woman would give up luxury to marry a penniless man. Willie insists the story is true to his life and argues that poverty doesn’t erase love or worth. Lamone agrees to push ahead, and the film cuts to the premiere of Willie’s play, now titled Courage.

Outside the theater, Willie’s mother watches with a mix of pride and fear as the first act unfolds, while his father and brothers watch the performance with surprised awe. Jeffrey arrives with news that Mary is gravely ill, prompting Willie to rush to her side. The Admiral is furious, but Willie disregards the threat and makes his way to Mary. She, meanwhile, appears emotionally distant, accusing Willie of neglect, though the tide of the moment shifts when Jeffrey phones with news that Courage has become a hit; the production is a success and destined for a long run.

Back at the hospital, the couple faces a choice: celebrate their victory or savor the possibility of a different life together. If the play’s triumph offers a pathway to security, Mary’s illness complicates everything, yet the love between Willie and Mary endures. The word from the producer is triumphant—Courage has resonated with audiences, earning a five-minute standing ovation and a future that could span a year of performances. Willie suggests celebrating in Paris or Rome, but Mary quietly suggests a simpler, more lasting future: a home and a family. They embrace, ready to begin not just a new chapter of art, but a new chapter of life together. > “The show is a great success.”
