In the year 1961, in Belleville, New Jersey, Tommy DeVito makes a confident statement about being the keeper of his group's story. He expresses how his influence has kept him and his friends from dire situations that could have ended their lives.

Tommy visits a local barbershop where his friend Frankie Castelluccio is giving a shave to the infamous mobster Gyp DeCarlo. In an unexpected turn, Tommy's entrance startles Frankie, resulting in an accidental nick to Gyp's cheek, but the mobster takes it in stride.

After dropping off Gyp, Tommy heads to Frankie's home where a family dinner is taking place. Frankie's mother expresses her discontent regarding his friends, highlighting a troubled family dynamic that looms over Frankie's life.

Undiscouraged by his mother's concerns, Tommy persuades Frankie that they are just going to a practice session. Instead, they devise a plan to pull off a heist to steal a vault, igniting a string of reckless adventures.

The heist quickly goes awry as they attempt to force the vault into Frankie's car. In a comedic twist, they crash through a store window, leading to a chaotic escape as they scramble to get away from the scene.

Later, Tommy, Frankie, and Nicky perform at a club as The Variety Trio. During their act, Tommy showcases Frankie's impressive falsetto, drawing the attention of a stunning red-haired woman in the audience.

Backstage, Tommy offers Frankie colorful advice on women, categorizing them into two distinct types. This conversation sets the stage for Frankie’s misguided attempts to win over the captivating redhead, leading to complications.

Frankie's life takes a turn for the worse when his and Tommy's antics catch up with them. Facing legal repercussions, Frankie's parents insist Tommy stay away, pushing Frankie into a darker path.

After serving six months in a correctional facility, Tommy's return brings chaos. He and Nicky get into trouble while trying to break into a church alongside Frankie, reigniting their reckless lifestyle.

As time passes, Frankie becomes enamored with Mary Delgado, a captivating woman who enters his life. Despite Tommy's warnings, Frankie pursues her vigorously, resulting in their eventual marriage.

Frankie's life spirals into chaos when he finds himself driving with Stosh and Donnie, two precarious individuals. This escapade leads him to numerous near-death experiences, further complicating his life.

Tommy learns about the talented songwriter Bob Gaudio, whose songwriting abilities promise to elevate their music careers. This discovery ignites new ambitions for the group as they aim for greater success.

The trio evolves into a band called The Four Lovers, facing many challenges along the way. With Bob's songwriting, they begin to rise in the music world, crafting their identity and unique sound.

The band's breakthrough comes with their hit song 'Sherry,' catapulting them to fame. While they enjoy a lavish lifestyle, the pressures of fame strain Frankie's marriage and create underlying tensions within the group.

In 1990, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Frankie, Bob, and Nick have a poignant reunion reflecting on their tumultuous journey. They rekindle their bond by performing 'Sherry,' celebrating their enduring friendship and shared musical legacy.
