Jared (Paul Walker) and Sam (Jessica Alba) are a young couple reveling in the rustic beauty of the Bahamas. Struggling to make ends meet, they dream of a life filled with adventure as treasure hunters. Their aspirations take a turn when Jared loses his job, and his friend Bryce (Scott Caan) visits with an enticing opportunity. Bryce, a New York lawyer, arrives with his latest girlfriend Amanda (Ashley Scott), bringing along a luxury vacation house and a boat.
During a day of snorkeling, the group stumbles upon artifacts believed to originate from a famous French pirate ship, the Zephyr. Their discovery deepens as they encounter the wreckage of a plane, laden with a significant stash of cocaine. While Bryce and Amanda support the idea of exploiting this find, Jared and Sam remain firmly against it, choosing to keep their integrity intact. Before they report the plane and its cargo, they decide to secure their claim on the sunken treasure first.
To facilitate the treasure hunt, Jared and Bryce visit a local boat supplier for equipment, with the funds meant to be provided by Bryce. However, Jared soon discovers that Bryce is heavily indebted to a loan shark after borrowing money in Las Vegas. Unbeknownst to Jared, Bryce and Amanda are scheming to sell some of the cocaine to a local dealer, Primo (Tyson Beckford), who has connections to drug lord Reyes (James Frain). The stakes escalate when Reyes confronts them at gunpoint, demanding the return of his cocaine.
Under duress, Jared must comply with Reyes’s orders to retrieve the cocaine. This decision causes a rift between him and Sam, who is horrified by his betrayal of their values. In a moment of desperation, she leaves him, declaring that “they” are over. Despite attempts to gain back Sam’s trust, the situation becomes dire when Amanda faces a shark attack during their illicit operation, later succumbing to injuries at the hospital.
In the wake of Amanda’s death, Sam and Jared reunite, but their challenges are far from over. Their confrontation with Primo leads to an intense car chase, culminating in Jared’s surrender in an attempt to protect Sam and Bryce by proposing they trade the Zephyr’s treasure for their safety. He is taken to Reyes’s boat, where he discovers Primo, Reyes, and their crew murdered, and narrowly escapes an encounter with Bates (Josh Brolin), a local salvage expert seeking revenge.
While tensions mount, betrayal lurks closer than expected. Sam, trying to take control, finds herself captured by Bates’s men as Bryce flees to join Jared instead of waiting for her. As the dangerous game unfolds, Jared faces the daunting task of negotiating Sam’s release while navigating Bates’s hostility.
In a dramatic climax, Jared sacrifices his safety by diving into the water, wielding a hidden plan that leads to a showdown below the surface. Meanwhile, Sam, now liberated, must navigate her own perilous circumstances on the boat. Amidst the chaos, the plane explodes, destroying the last remnants of their dirty dealings and marking a pivotal moment for all involved.
Fast forward six weeks, the trio emerges with newfound resilience, salvaging what remains of the Zephyr. An unexpected discovery awaits when a misadventure reveals a cache of hidden gold bars, promising a wealth of potential and a brighter future for Jared, Sam, and Bryce as they venture forward, united in their pursuit of dreams once more.
