Twelve-year-old Meggie resides with her father, Mortimer (Andy Serkis), who is a master bookbinder, pouring love and care into every page he crafts. One fateful night, an enigmatic figure named Dustfinger (actor not provided) appears at their door, seeking refuge from ominous forces that pursue him. Captivated, Meggie listens as Dustfinger reveals he is being hunted by the ruthless Capricorn (actor not provided), a villain determined to get what he desires at any cost.

The following morning, Mortimer informs Meggie that they will be visiting Aunt Elinor (actress not provided), his sister-in-law. Intrigued, Meggie eagerly joins them, accompanied by Dustfinger and his loyal marten, Gwin (actor not provided). Upon arriving at Elinor’s home, Mortimer unveils a precious book, Inkheart, setting in motion a series of unexpected events.

Their visit takes a harrowing turn when Mortimer, along with Meggie and Elinor, is captured and imprisoned in Capricorn’s lair. In the dim confines of their cell, they reunite with Mortimer, who unveils the secret of his connection to the world of Inkheart.

Years ago, Mortimer stumbled upon an extraordinary gift—his ability to bring characters from stories to life through the act of reading aloud. However, with this extraordinary power comes a daunting cost: for every character summoned from the pages, something must vanish into the void. During one fateful reading, three notorious figures—Capricorn, Basta, and Dustfinger—escaped the confines of the book, engulfing Mortimer’s life in chaos.

In a heart-wrenching twist, Meggie’s mother, Teresa (actress not provided), vanished within the world of Inkheart, prompting Mortimer’s desperate attempts to retrieve her, which always ended in failure due to the malevolent forces at play. As events spiral further into peril, Capricorn instructs Mortimer to read from Tales from the Thousand and One Nights, inadvertently summoning a young boy named Farid (actor not provided).

As night descends, Dustfinger orchestrates a daring escape, freeing the prisoners and propelling them into a treacherous adventure. While Elinor returns home, Meggie, Mortimer, Farid, and Dustfinger venture to meet Fenoglio (actor not provided), the mysterious author of Inkheart. Upon reaching Fenoglio’s humble dwelling, they learn to their dismay that all copies of the book have been destroyed, save for one cherished edition held by Capricorn.

Fenoglio provides refuge in an upstairs apartment above his bookstore, giving Mortimer the chance to mend the author’s broken volumes. Yet, their fragile calm is shattered when Mortimer receives a troubling message from Elinor, compelling him to leave Meggie under Fenoglio’s care alongside his three grandsons.

As fate would have it, Capricorn’s thugs capture both Fenoglio and Meggie, imprisoning them in an attic within Capricorn’s stronghold. In this sinister hideaway, Meggie uncovers the astonishing truth about her own inherited gift: she too can bring book characters to life by reading aloud.

Meanwhile, as Farid and Dustfinger discreetly infiltrate the village, Dustfinger reconnects with an old friend, Resa (actor not provided)—an enigmatic mute who once found herself pulled into the fantastical realm of Inkheart. Together, they devise a daring strategy to reclaim this cherished narrative from Capricorn’s sinister grip, yet their plot soon faces perilous discovery. Fenoglio, acutely aware of the stakes, begins crafting a counter-curse to halt the looming threat of the dark incantation known as “The Shadow.”

As Elinor and Mortimer arrive in the village, they unwittingly become embroiled in the escalating tension. Elinor is captured alongside Resa and Dustfinger in the dark confines of the crypt. Sensing the gravity of their plight, Meggie pleads to communicate with Dustfinger, only to uncover a profound revelation: Resa—the mother she has lived without—is her mother.

Tensions escalate as Farid and Mortimer ignite a fire at Capricorn’s fortress, creating a diversion that allows Meggie to exchange Fenoglio’s narrative for her own, birthing the Shadow—a dark force conceived from the remnants of magical beings it once sought to annihilate. Empowered by this bold act, Mortimer reads the final lines from the book, vanquishing Capricorn and breaking his malevolent hold.

As the aftermath unfolds, Meggie brings the story to its conclusion, witnessing the Shadow liberate itself from its former master and transform back into its original forms: the glass men, fairies, and trolls it once represented. Many of these magical entities, now freed by Meggie’s courageous actions, return to the safekeeping of Elinor. The trio of Meggie, Mortimer, and Resa begins their journey towards a fresh start at Elinor’s estate.

Amidst this transformed world, the night air echoes with the whispers of Gwin, Dustfinger, and Farid as they fade into the shadows, guided only by the faint glow of Dustfinger’s pilfered copy of Inkheart—a stolen relic forever entwining their fates.
