Maria is destined to become the new Moon Princess because she alone can see the unicorn, which is essential for breaking the curse. The first Moon Princess gave the unicorn to her husband as a gift, and only a pure heart can perceive this magical creature. When Maria spots the unicorn in the forest, Marmaduke realizes she is the chosen one who must fulfill the ancient prophecy.

Early in the story, Maria is the only one who notices the unicorn wandering through the manor grounds, setting up her destiny.

When Maria first meets Loveday in the cave, Loveday speaks of her past failure to unite the families, hinting at her deeper connection to the conflict.

Wrolf was not an ordinary dog but the black lion in disguise, originally given to the first Moon Princess by her father. When he sacrifices himself saving Maria and Robin from Coeur's men, the curse temporarily claims him. However, when Maria successfully breaks the curse by returning the pearls to the moon, Wrolf is restored to his true form as the majestic black lion.

Sir Benjamin warns Maria about the dangerous black lion prowling the forest, and Wrolf's unusual strength and ferocity hint at his true nature.
