Joseph Mersault and his family live a harsh but peaceful life as fur trappers in the isolated Canadian wilderness. Joseph teaches his daughter, Renee, the skills needed for trapping while Anne manages their home chores, creating a close-knit family environment.

Their tranquil existence is disrupted when a predatory wolf begins threatening their traps and food supply. Despite Anne's strong objections and worries for their safety, Joseph is resolved to hunt down the animal to protect their livelihood.

Joseph takes Renee with him on a grueling expedition to track the wolf, fostering their bond further. During their search, Joseph discovers fresh tracks and decides to send Renee back home for her safety, preparing himself to confront the dangerous animal.

Alone in the wilderness, Joseph stumbles upon a chilling scene: a group of young women brutally murdered and arranged in a circle. This shocking discovery reveals the presence of a greater danger than just the wolf they were hunting.

Upon returning home, Joseph chooses to conceal the horrifying truth of his discovery from Anne, fabricating a tale about the wolf escaping his aim. His decision reflects his internal struggle as he becomes increasingly fixated on tracking the mysterious killer.

As days pass without Joseph's return, Anne grows increasingly anxious. She approaches local law enforcement officers Barthes and Lucy, but her worries are dismissed, leaving her feeling helpless as they downplay the dangers posed by the wolf.

With supplies dwindling, Anne is forced to kill a baby deer to provide for her family, an action that deeply disturbs Renee. In a surprising turn, Renee takes the lead and guides her mother on how to skin the deer, showcasing her growing maturity.

One night, while investigating strange noises from the woods, Anne finds Lou, a stranger injured by a wolf. Unable to turn him away, she brings him back to their cabin, unknowingly setting off a chain of harrowing events.

Suspicious of Anne and Renee's activities, Officer Barthes conducts his own investigation. He uncovers a grisly scene similar to Joseph's earlier discovery, but his search is cut short when he becomes trapped in one of Joseph's traps.

During a food foray, Anne stumbles upon the cold body of Joseph, realizing that Lou was responsible for his death. Fueled by grief and urgency, she rushes back to warn Renee, only to find herself in grave danger.

After returning to the cabin, Anne is violently assaulted by Lou, who reveals his true nature. Left unconscious, she must confront the terrifying reality of her situation when she awakens, now at Lou's mercy.

Realizing the danger she is in, Anne cleverly uses an animal trap to incapacitate Lou. Despite the horror of her situation, she finds a moment of strength and determination, grieving for Renee while fighting for survival.

Despite his injuries from the trap, Officer Barthes manages to fire his weapon to signal for help. Although the rescue arrives too late to save him, it sets the stage for a confrontation that will uncover the nightmare unfolding in the cabin.

Driven by rage and vengeance, Anne methodically skins Lou alive, drowning out his cries with music from his walkman. Her transformation from a worried mother to a ruthless avenger highlights the depths of her despair and desperation.
