What Happens in Humans in the Loop: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Humans in the Loop (2025) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Nehma, Sonal Madhushankar, an Adivasi woman of the Oraon community, returns to her native village in Jharkhand from Ranchi, bringing her daughter Dhaanu and infant son Guntu after the breakdown of her dhuku marriage (live-in relationship). To support her family, she takes up a job at a local data-labelling centre, where workers annotate images and videos to train artificial intelligence systems for international clients. Soon, she notices a troubling gap between the rigid categories demanded by the AI and the ecological wisdom of her own community, a clash that forces her to rethink how technology categorizes life and labor in a world that is not so neutral after all.

Dhaanu, her daughter, struggles to adjust to the family’s new life in the village, missing the urban world she left behind, and she even makes a futile attempt to escape from the village, hoping to reclaim something of the life she once knew. The film invites us to sit with those tensions—the pull between a familiar, land-rooted way of living and the lure of a broader, more modern horizon—without smoothing over the human cost of such transitions.

Humans in the Loop is a social film that happens to be about AI: with its firm focus on indigenous women’s labour and the mother-daughter bond, it argues that the ethics of AI cannot be separated from questions of caste, gender, and geography. The narrative suggests that intelligence—whether human or machine—bears the imprint of its teachers, and that when those teachers are invisible, uncredited, or culturally misunderstood, the knowledge that is transmitted risks reproducing that absence. In portraying the quiet infrastructure of work that sustains cutting-edge technology, the film raises important questions about who benefits from AI and whose voices are left out of the loop, all while deeply grounding its message in the lived realities of a community navigating tradition, resilience, and change.

Humans in the Loop Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Humans in the Loop (2025): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Nehma return to her Oraon village after living in Ranchi?

Nehma returns to her village in Jharkhand after her dhuku marriage (a traditional live-in relationship) breaks down. With her daughter Dhaanu and infant son Guntu, she needs a support system and means to provide for her family, making the return to her native community a practical necessity rather than a choice.

Foreshadowing: The film opens with this return, establishing immediately that Nehma is rebuilding her life after a personal disruption.

  • oraon
  • ranchi
  • dhuku
  • village return
Q2

Why does Dhaanu try to escape from the village?

Dhaanu struggles to adjust to rural life after leaving the city of Ranchi. She deeply misses the urban world she knew and feels out of place in the village, making a futile escape attempt in hopes of reclaiming the life she left behind.

Foreshadowing: Her longing for the city is established early, as she reconnects with family while feeling displaced in the rural setting.

  • city
  • village
  • adjustment
Q3

What problem does Nehma discover at the data-labeling center?

Nehma notices a troubling gap between the rigid categories required by AI systems and the ecological wisdom of her Oraon community. The labels fail to capture local knowledge, practices, and lived realities, revealing how technology categorizes life in ways that ignore indigenous understanding.

Foreshadowing: This awareness grows as she spends time annotating images and videos, confronting the limitations of standardized classification.

  • ai
  • data labeling
  • categories
  • ecological wisdom
  • oraon
Q4

Why does the film connect AI ethics to caste, gender, and geography?

The film argues that AI ethics cannot be separated from social hierarchies. Since the workers who train AI systems are often invisible, uncredited, and from marginalized communities, the knowledge transmitted through AI reproduces those absences. The Oraon women's labor highlights how caste, gender, and rural geography shape who teaches AI and whose knowledge gets valued.

Foreshadowing: Nehma's position as an Adivasi woman doing this work makes her the perfect lens for this critique.

  • ai ethics
  • caste
  • gender
  • geography
  • marginalization
Q5

What does the film mean by 'intelligence bears the imprint of its teachers'?

The film suggests that both human and artificial intelligence reflect the perspectives, knowledge, and biases of those who teach them. When teachers are invisible, uncredited, or culturally misunderstood, as with the data-labeling workers, the knowledge transmitted through AI systems mirrors those gaps and misunderstandings.

Foreshadowing: This theme emerges through Nehma's reflections as she recognizes how her community's wisdom goes unrecognized in the AI categorization process.

  • intelligence
  • teachers
  • knowledge
  • imprint
  • ai training
Q6

Why is Dhaanu unhappy living in the village?

Dhaanu grew up in Ranchi and is accustomed to urban life. Returning to the Oraon village means losing the world she knew, her friends, lifestyle, and sense of belonging. She feels like an outsider in her own family's community and grieves the displacement from her familiar environment.

Foreshadowing: Her emotional strain is introduced early, creating tension within the household from the moment of arrival.

Q7

What is a dhuku marriage that ended in the film?

Dhuku is a traditional Oraon tribal custom referring to a live-in relationship or partnership outside formal wedding rites. When Nehma's dhuku marriage breaks down, she loses that domestic arrangement and must return to her natal village with her children to rebuild her life.

Foreshadowing: The breakdown of this marriage is the catalyst for Nehma's entire journey in the film.

  • tribal custom

Q8

What power dynamics does the film show between global AI and local workers?

The film reveals how international AI clients dictate rigid classification systems while local workers like Nehma perform the essential but invisible labor of labeling data. This creates an extractive relationship where distant clients shape working conditions and profit from knowledge produced locally, without recognition or fair compensation.

Foreshadowing: This dynamic becomes clearer as Nehma works weeks at the center and witnesses how demand from abroad controls the labor process.

Q9

Why does Nehma take the data-labeling job?

Nehma needs to support her family financially after her marriage ends, and the data-labeling center offers available work in her village. The job represents one of the few viable employment options for an Adivasi woman with limited formal education, making it both an economic necessity and an entry point into the global technology chain.

Foreshadowing: The job is introduced as a practical solution to her financial situation, before the deeper thematic questions emerge.

  • nehma
  • job
  • data labeling
  • employment

Q10

How does the mother-daughter relationship change throughout the film?

Nehma and Dhaanu navigate significant tension as Dhaanu struggles with displacement while Nehma works to provide and reconnect with her roots. Their bond is tested by Dhaanu's unhappiness and escape attempt, but the film shows moments of tenderness and resilience that reflect how their relationship becomes a map for enduring change together.

Foreshadowing: The emotional strain peaks with Dhaanu's escape attempt, forcing mother and daughter to confront their differences.

  • mother-daughter

  • bond
  • tension

Q11

What happens at the end of the film? Does Nehma stay in the village?

The film concludes with an ambiguous ending, leaving the central conflict between ecological wisdom and rigid AI systems unresolved. Nehma's future remains open, whether she continues the data-labeling work, finds another way to support her family, or manages to integrate her community's knowledge into technology, the film does not specify.

Foreshadowing: The open-ended conclusion reflects the ongoing nature of these social and technological tensions.

Ending explained

What Happens at the End of Humans in the Loop?

How Humans in the Loop (2025) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.

Read the full ending explained

When Nehma returns home from the data‑labeling center she finds that both of her children have vanished. Panic drives her and Roshan into the forest, where, after a frantic search, they spot Dhaanu emerging onto the road with the baby Guntu. In the confrontation Dhaanu vents a mixture of anger, fear and yearning that Nehma cannot fully grasp, but the sight of her daughter alive, clutching the phone her father had given her, is enough to shatter the mother's despair.

Through the footage Dhaanu captured on her phone, Nehma discovers that her daughter has begun to notice the forest’s quiet wonders—birds tracing patterns in the sky, an ancient tree that seems to hold the memory of their ancestors, and even a trail of porcupine quills that lead them back to safety. The porcupine, an animal that once befriended Nehma as a child, reappears symbolically as a guardian in the woods, suggesting that the land remembers kindness and can guide the lost.

Seeing Dhaanu’s tentative connection to the environment, Nehma realizes that the world she has been trying to protect for her children is not a prison but a place where they can claim an identity that blends both tradition and the possibilities of technology. She apologises for not having understood her daughter’s needs, returns the phone, and allows Dhaanu to keep speaking with her father. When asked whether she will return to Ranchi, Dhaanu shakes her head—she is not ready to leave the forest that now feels like home.

The film closes with the two women standing together in the trees, the AI‑trained “digital child” humming in the background of Nehma’s work, and the porcupine’s silent presence in the underbrush. It suggests that a balance between the natural world and the machines we build is possible, but only if the voices of those who live in the margins are finally heard and respected.
