In the bustling heart of Rio de Janeiro, a young woman steps off a train with nothing but a suitcase and the memory of an aunt who raised her. The city swallows her quiet hopes, offering a cramped boarding house shared with three other women and a modest typist job that barely reaches the minimum wage. The streets pulse with the clatter of the subway, especially on Sundays, and the soft glow of a radio program called Time becomes her daily companion, filling the gaps left by a life of extreme poverty and limited education.

Macabéa lives in a world where survival is measured in small, fragile comforts: a bottle of Coca‑Cola, the occasional magazine cutout, and the rhythm of a song that can bring her to tears. Her demeanor is marked by an earnest politeness that masks an acute unawareness of her own deprivation. She navigates the office and her tiny apartment with a childlike simplicity, learning the customs of a society she never knew existed by mimicking the gestures and phrases she hears on the airwaves.

A chance encounter introduces her to Olímpio, a fellow Northeastern migrant whose dreams are amplified by a swaggering confidence that he will someday rise to political power. He is rough around the edges, proud of the gold tooth he flashes as a symbol of his imagined future, and he sees the city as a ladder he plans to climb. Their interaction sets up a quiet contrast between his loud ambitions and her soft, almost invisible yearning to belong.

Around them, other residents of the boarding house, such as the flamboyant Glória, provide a kaleidoscope of attitudes toward love, work, and survival. Their voices echo through the corridors, offering Macabéa both guidance and confusion as she tries to piece together an identity in a metropolis that seems simultaneously endless and indifferent.
