The narrative follows Luzia and her three distant friends as they pursue a better future. Leaving Brazil’s impoverished Northeast, Luzia travels to Rio de Janeiro in search of the fiancé who went ahead to clear a path for them. Alone in the Marvelous City, she accepts Calunga’s protection and later finds companionship with Inácio.
