During the Nazi occupation, a fugitive Jewish woman rides a trolley near the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. Stray bullets force the tram to seek refuge in an empty building, where she meets her former fiancé. Now married and living in a suburban home reachable by the same trolley, he offers to hide her. His eager wife, the poetic building owner, and the suspicious superintendent are drawn into the concealment.
