In the picturesque coastal town of Grand Isle, Louisiana, two girl scouts knock on the door of an imposing house, hoping to sell their cookies. Inside lives Fancy, portrayed alluringly by Kelsey Grammer, a captivating Southern belle whose overly affectionate demeanor makes the young girls feel uneasy.
The narrative shifts back to 1988, when Walter (Nicolas Cage) awakens to the sound of an intruder. A masked burglar breaks in, leading to a frantic chase where Walt resorts to gunfire, inadvertently causing the burglar to crash through a fence. Meanwhile, at a police station, Buddy (Luke Benward) finds himself under the intense scrutiny of Detective George Jones, who focuses on Buddy’s faith while he vehemently denies any involvement in a murder. The story often revisits this interrogation, with Detective Newton (Zulay Henao) observing through a one-way mirror.
Through the use of flashbacks, we witness Buddy’s attempts to secure a brighter future for his family. Dining at a restaurant with his wife Lisa (Emily Marie Palmer) and their baby, Buddy desperately tries to pitch an investment to a businessman but feels the weight of his unfulfilled aspirations. The tension at home grows as Lisa resists his advances for intimacy, leading Buddy to declare he will take care of them, even as he conceals his insecurities.
Back at the expansive home, the increasing tension is palpable. Buddy arrives, claiming he is there to repair the fence, only to be greeted by an intimidating Walt, who distinguishes himself with his long hair and beard. Their conversation is peppered with mentions of their military service, revealing Walt’s condescending attitude towards Buddy, referring to him as “Tadpole.” The atmosphere thickens further with news reports about missing teenagers and an impending hurricane, adding an ominous backdrop to the emerging chaos.
As the rain pours and Buddy insists on leaving, Walt refuses him the extra payment and despite Buddy’s truck failing to start, an unexpected invitation from Fancy for dinner turns into a fascinating exchange filled with underlying tension. The couple’s marriage is celebrated, albeit bitterly, as Fancy expresses her disappointment in Walt’s lack of acknowledgment for their anniversary.
Fancy giving Buddy a peek into her home leads to mixed feelings; as she shows him their history, hidden behind locked doors is a basement shrouded in secrecy. The atmosphere becomes charged when she changes clothes in his presence, transitioning into a flirtation that leaves Buddy both intrigued and alarmed. This dynamic is further complicated when Walt, nursing various emotional wounds from the war, approaches Buddy with a disturbing request: to kill Fancy, insisting she suffers from terminal cancer. Although reluctant, the temptation of a hefty sum and the delivered cyanide push Buddy into a dark moral dilemma.
In a moment of confrontation, Buddy discovers the twisted truth behind Walt’s claims: Fancy is not ill, but an accomplice in a much darker plot. A struggling battle ensues with chaos erupting as Walt and Buddy engage in a fierce fight. The power failure adds to the surreal horror, and the basement reveals more horrifying secrets.
As events spiral out of control, Buddy wakes up in his truck with a lifeless body and police breathing down his neck, leaving him unable to explain himself amidst growing suspicions. Back at the station, Detective Jones confronts Buddy, navigating the murky waters of guilt, morality, and innocence. Just when hope appears lost, Detective Newton presents evidence that changes the game, leading to a police raid on the couple’s home that unveils the harrowing truth behind the missing individuals.
The impending hurricane’s wreckage frames the story’s climax, revealing a web of deception and rescuing the missing girl scouts and teenagers, whilst Buddy grapples with the fractures in his own family life. Ultimately, all paths converge in a dramatic showdown that leaves scars on the town and its residents but also a flicker of hope for new beginnings as Buddy and Lisa contemplate a second chance. Survival, love, and the price of morality linger as pressing themes throughout this dark tale of desperation and consequence.
