At the onset of the film, we meet a couple named Pia and Rob who are eager for a vacation. Rob works as a lawyer and often drowns his stress in alcohol, while Pia is an artist. They’ve both carved out time from their hectic schedules to escape for a much-needed getaway. Their journey takes them to a dog yard where they decide to rent a boat. Surprisingly, Rob opts for a smaller boat instead of a larger one, prompting Pia to question his choice. He reassures her that a smaller vessel will make for an easier and more enjoyable trip.
As they set sail, the couple finds themselves enjoying a serene time on the water, engaging in fishing. However, their peaceful outing takes a turn when Rob confesses to Pia that he recently lost a significant case, explaining that the vacation is his way of dealing with the resultant stress. Tension escalates when Pia catches a fish, and Rob, in a rather detached manner, ends its life, which shocks Pia and leads her to confront him about his actions.
As they continue their adventure, ominous weather looms on the horizon, threatening a fierce storm. Rob urges them to navigate back, but they quickly realize they have lost their bearings. With no other option, Rob proposes that they seek refuge on a nearby island, where they hope to find help. Upon their arrival, they witness a disturbing scene: a group of three individuals viciously assaulting a man near a car. Pia feels an unsettling vibe and insists they should leave, to which Rob reluctantly agrees.
They spot an abandoned house and, thinking it might provide shelter from the storm, decide to wait out the weather there. Inside, they discover it’s empty but dilapidated, filled with signs of neglect. Just as rain starts to pour, Rob ventures outside to look for a phone, hoping to call for assistance. Instead, he stumbles upon a room filled with drug plants, hinting at the nefarious activities of the trio they had seen earlier.
As the storm rages outside, the three men return home, and Pia’s fear escalates at the sight of them. When they confront Rob and Pia, the men brandish weapons, demanding to know how they ended up on their property. Rob, desperate for safety, reveals their situation in a bid to gain some sympathy. The men agree to let them stay the night, under the condition that they will drop them off at the dock the following day. Despite their unsettling intentions, Rob and Pia see no alternative but to comply.
The unwanted hospitality turns increasingly sinister as tensions rise. One of the men, Jimmy, orders Pia to prepare food, which leads to further humiliation as Rob is bullied. Feeling cornered, Pia speaks to Rob in French about escaping, but Jimmy’s ignorance of the language becomes a comical element amid the horror. When the conversation takes a dark turn, resulting in Jimmy’s threats towards Rob, Pia is forced to acquiesce to the men’s demands and begins preparing food.
In a shocking turn of events, Jimmy’s cruel behavior escalates, leading to a moment where he brutally enforces his will over both Pia and Rob. The couple’s situation worsens as they must navigate deceit and intimidation while developing a desperate plan to escape from their captors, who are deeply entrenched in drug-related criminal activities.
Facing their bleak reality, the couple overcomes several harrowing situations that test their resilience and ingenuity. As Rob and Pia strategize their next moves, they are forced to confront the violent nature of their captors while simultaneously battling their incapacitating fear. Finally, a critical moment arrives when they manage to devise a plan that pivots from submission to resistance.
The climax unfolds with a gripping escape that is fraught with tension and raw emotions. Utilizing makeshift weapons and the element of surprise, Pia and Rob confront their captors, hoping to reclaim their freedom. The film crescendos into chaos, where personal fortitude and instinct become their only allies against a backdrop of brutality.
Ultimately, the pursuit for survival leads to shocking revelations and intense confrontations, culminating in an explosive finale where they must fight not only for their safety but for their very lives. Will they find the strength to break free from the grasp of danger, or will they become another victim of circumstance? The harrowing journey navigates themes of survival, trust, and the instinctual human drive to escape from the horrors that ensnare them.
