The Bayou

The film opens with a DEA raid on a hidden meth production facility deep in the Louisiana Everglades. The trip also includes Madalena Aragão as Alice and Elisha Applebaum as Malika, among others, all hoping to reach a destination that holds meaning for Kyle. Kyle carries an urn with the ashes of her older brother Flynn Barnard, Jamie, and she plans to scatter them at a place that mattered to him. The group’s dynamic reveals underlying tensions: Kyle’s prolonged grieving clashes with her friends’ worries about her emotional state, and the trip becomes a quiet test of loyalty and care under strain.

During the flight, the engine falters and fails. The pilot fights to regain control as the plane loses altitude, aiming for a clearing, but the aircraft crashes into the swamp. The wreckage sinks, the pilot is killed on impact, and the survivors are left stranded among tangled debris and flooded marsh. Kyle sustains a head injury but remains conscious, while several friends suffer cuts and bruises. The group scrambles to assess their situation, salvage what gear they can, and decide who will take the lead in a wilderness that suddenly feels both vast and hostile.

Their first encounter with the mutated alligators confirms the peril: these creatures are more aggressive than the usual swamp predators, pursuing them onto land and refusing to retreat even when cornered. The attacks are swift, brutal, and unnervingly coordinated, and one member of the group dies in the chaos, underscoring that this is no ordinary swamp crisis. In the shock of the violence, Kyle makes a fateful decision: she scatters Jamie’s ashes in the contaminated water, hoping to honor him and perhaps bring some form of closure. The mutated gators strike with increased strength, speed, and persistence, often appearing in coordinated groups rather than as solitary hunters. As the threats mount, Kyle begins to experience hallucinations and guilt-driven visions of her dead brother, a psychological strain that threatens her judgment and leadership. In a turn toward answers, the group discovers the abandoned drug facility where the initial contamination occurred. They uncover evidence of meth production, which explains the unnatural behavior of the alligators and the extent of the ecological damage. Yet this discovery comes too late to avert more encounters with the enhanced predators, who have claimed portions of the facility as part of their territory.

The climax centers on Kyle’s hard-won resolve: she confronts both her psychological turmoil and the physical danger of the mutated gators. In a desperate gambit, she uses the remaining aviation fuel from the crashed plane to construct an explosive trap, sacrificing their last chance of signaling for rescue to eliminate several of the most aggressive creatures. The blow buys time and space for escape, but it comes at a great personal cost.

The resolution follows Kyle as the sole survivor, adrift on debris as she drifts toward what may be civilization. She processes her grief over Jamie in the quiet, hard-won solitude of the open water. Yet the final moments hint that the contamination has spread beyond the initial site, with more mutated creatures visible in the distance. Kyle’s survival comes with deep psychological scars and a heavy sense of responsibility, suggesting that the environmental disaster and her own grief will continue to haunt her long after the screen goes dark.
