Dian Fossey, an occupational therapist driven by a fierce curiosity about primates, is spurred into a lifelong mission after meeting anthropologist Louis Leakey. She pours her energy into writing to him, seeking a chance to catalog and study Africa’s elusive mountain gorillas. When Leakey invites her to a lecture in Louisville, Kentucky in 1966, she argues her case with quiet passion and convinces him that her dream is more than a hobby—it’s a calling.

Their journey carries her from the lecture hall to the depths of the jungle. In the Congo, Leakey and his foundation enable her to begin contact with the gorillas and introduce her to a local animal tracker, Sembagare. Together they settle into the wild, tracing a troop of gorillas through dense forest as the political upheaval of the Congo Crisis looms overhead. Soldiers intrude, the research site is seized, and Fossey is accused of espionage by those who see foreigners as threats. The dream of uninterrupted study teeters on the edge of collapse as she is forced to abandon the Congo.

Resilience turns the tide when Rosamond Carr—a compassionate host and ally—urges Fossey to stay, switching the course of her work toward new ground. The mission moves north to the forests bordering Rwanda, where Fossey discovers alarming signs of poaching near a fledgling base at Karisoke. Her magnified attention to the gorillas’ social lives—how they communicate, interact, and form communities—begins to yield real insights that attract international notice.
