The film opens with Stephen Hawking, a Cambridge student, as he encounters Jane for the first time. Although he is somewhat reserved initially, the two soon find a deep connection. When Stephen learns about his debilitating illness, he attempts to distance himself from Jane to spare her pain. However, Jane is determined to remain by his side, fully aware that his condition will worsen and gradually take him from her. They marry soon after, and as Stephen earns his doctorate, he becomes increasingly passionate about cosmological physics. Throughout his struggles, Jane steadfastly supports him as his illness affects his movement, balance, speech, and even his ability to swallow.
Together, they have two children, and Stephen’s groundbreaking work begins to attract significant attention. Nevertheless, Jane’s own spirit begins to falter, though she keeps her feelings hidden. Her mother suggests that she join a church choir to occupy her free time, which leads her to meet Jonathan, the choir’s tutor. He grows close to Jane and her family, even assisting Stephen during an outdoor outing. As Jane finds herself developing feelings for Jonathan, he withdraws due to the murmurs of concern from friends and family.
While Jane spends time with Jonathan, Stephen attends an opera, where he encounters a severe health episode and slips into a coma. The medical team hesitates to perform a tracheotomy, given the atrophy of Stephen’s muscles, which would affect his ability to communicate. Despite the family’s apprehension, Jane advocates for the procedure, which created a new communication barrier between them.
To assist Stephen, Jane hires Elaine, who quickly adapts to his needs, resulting in Jane increasingly drifting away from Stephen. Stephen eventually acquires a robotic speech aid, which greatly improves his ability to communicate. However, as tensions rise, Jane reaches her breaking point and files for divorce, ultimately marrying Jonathan later. Yet, a poignant moment occurs when Stephen calls for Jane, his first wife, to be by his side as he receives a prestigious honor from the Queen.
This tale is not just about love and loss; it delves into the complexities of relationships when faced with life-altering challenges.
