Gone

Alex arrives in Sydney and realizes he has missed his bus. He sits on stone steps reading a travel guide as Taylor sits beside him and starts a casual conversation. Taylor insists that Alex come with him, setting the trip's uneasy dynamic from the start.

After a night of drinking and roughhousing with two girls, Alex awakens in a city park to find Taylor towering over him, snapping a Polaroid of him with one of the girls. Taylor suggests they continue the journey together, and Alex reluctantly agrees. The pair begin traveling as an odd new team on the road.

Alex and Taylor meet Sophie, who is with Ingrid, and the four of them decide to travel together. Sophie quickly becomes part of the group as they head toward Byron Bay and then Katherine Gorge in the Northern Territory. The road trip forms an uneasy quartet with shifting loyalties.

Ingrid hints she must meet someone and ends up catching a bus, effectively leaving the others to press on. They drive through the countryside and camp for the night in heavy rain, with Taylor driving and Alex and Sophie in the tent while the headlights intermittently illuminate them.

The next day they find themselves in a field on a clear day after the rain-soaked night, the mood tense but the journey continuing. They head toward a bar for a party, hoping to lift spirits or escape the growing friction within the group.

At the bar, a woman recognizes Alex as 'Jamie from Thailand' and confronts him about a past fraud. Taylor initially claims she is mistaken, then abruptly swipes at the woman, underscoring the volatile dynamics within the group.

After a day of driving they collide with a herd of kangaroos, leaving Alex with a major head wound. The trio stops at a motel where Sophie and Taylor procure medical supplies to help him recuperate.

Back on the road, Alex lashes out at Taylor, punching and kicking him. Sophie placates him and urges them to finish the trip, but the tension continues to simmer just beneath the surface.

The next morning Sophie searches for Alex, only to find the room empty. He texts her with a terse, sad message: 'I'm going.' The mystery of his whereabouts deepens the group's instability.

The trio resumes travel and Sophie receives a message that Ingrid wishes to meet them at Katherine Gorge. The plan to reunite at a scenic landmark raises the tension about what lies ahead.

Taylor becomes increasingly threatening, prompting Sophie to push him away and lock him out of the car. The pair continue toward Katherine Gorge as the atmosphere grows more dangerous.

In a grim moment, the back door of the car pops open and the lifeless body of Alex, wrapped in a sleeping bag, falls out onto the road. Sophie is left stunned by the sight as she drives on.

Taylor drags at the edge of the sleeping bag and tries to enter the cab, prompting Sophie to slam the brakes. The wire mesh edges gouge him as she accelerates and rams him, tearing him from the vehicle. She then rams him again, fatally, and drives away while sobbing.
