In 1943, in the heart of World War II, Circus Mezzapiotta—owned by a Jew named Israel—stages daring performances under the shadow of an increasingly brutal regime. Four freaks take the stage as the troupe’s core: Matilde, a girl who generates electricity and can electroshock anyone who dares to touch her; Cencio, an albino boy who can command insects; Fulvio, a so-called “man-beast” covered in hair from head to toe with superhuman strength; and Mario, a dwarf who can manipulate metal objects. The ensemble is both a marvel and a target as war rages around them, threatening to crush their fragile hope for survival.
As the conflict deepens, Israel proposes they seek a new life in America, while Fulvio urges them to borrow the prestige of the Berlin Zircus, a opulent showcase run by the Nazis who have taken Rome. The Zircus is the brainchild of a German pianist named Franz, a man with six fingers on each hand and clairvoyant powers who believes he foresaw Hitler’s suicide and the arrival of four superhuman beings who could alter the fate of the Third Reich. To him, the four freaks are the foretold saviors, and he builds a chilling drama around that prophecy, subjecting them to tortures and tests meant to prove or disprove his vision.
Israel manages to persuade the group to flee to America, but after gathering their savings, he mysteriously vanishes. A frantic attempt to hunt him down in Rome forces the four to split up: Matilde, who alone clings to the belief that Israel is genuine, heads off to find him; the others — [Fulvio], [Mario], and [Cencio] — head for the Berlin Zircus. On the road, Matilde narrowly escapes a German assault when a soldier tries to rape her, and she defends herself by turning the power of her gift against the attacker. She is rescued by a shabby pocket of partisans led by the formidable The Hunchback, who soon becomes her unlikely ally and protector. With their help, Matilde tracks Israel to a truck bound for a concentration camp, but her power still slips from her grasp when she most needs it, and she cannot save him. In quiet, painful honesty, she later confesses that she had accidentally killed her own mother, a revelation that adds a heavy fear to her already immense power.
Meanwhile, the trio at the Zircus—[Fulvio], [Mario], and [Cencio]—draw the attention of Franz, who makes them the centerpiece of a show designed to showcase what he believes will change the course of history. [Guercio], another partisan, alerts Matilde to the true, brutal purpose of the Zircus, and she leaves to rescue her friends. Her mission is thwarted when Franz captures her and plots to present the four to his brother Amon and to the iron will of Field Marshal Kesselring. In a cruel stage moment, Franz tries to force Matilde to electrocute a tiger, but she finally masters her gift and uses it to save the animal, humiliating the showman who condemns them to the stake. Matilde shatters the cell door with a decisive blast and the four escape, racing to save Israel, who now travels on a deadly death train.
Franz realizes that the four are the ones he’s been waiting for, and he murders Amon to steal his identity, donning his uniform as if nothing had happened. The attackers pursue the quartet across the war-torn landscape, and the four finally unleash the full force of their powers to overwhelm the German soldiers and rescue Israel and the other Jews. Yet the battle still rages, and Franz presses the attack with a ruthless strategic mind. In a piercing act of sacrifice, Israel gives his life to save Matilde, allowing her, at last, to take full command of her energy and unleash a colossal explosion that obliterates the Nazi soldiers. Standing witness to the aftermath, Franz realizes the grim truth: his vision wasn’t Hitler’s doom but his own, and with that reckoning he takes his own life. With the threat defeated and their freedom won, the four freaks are finally free to move forward, continuing their journey toward whatever fate may still await them.
