Eric LeMarque, portrayed by Josh Hartnett, is a former hockey player whose life has spiraled into a series of reckless behaviors fueled by his addiction to meth and the need for adrenaline. Despite his previous reputation as a professional athlete, he finds himself struggling with numerous injuries and a recent DUI that has prompted his concerned mother, Mira Sorvino, to pressure him into attending court for his wrongdoings. The situation is exacerbated by Eric’s realization that he has only seven days to show up and account for his actions.

On February 6, 2004, amidst a forecast predicting heavy snowfall, Eric makes the ill-fated decision to head to the Sierra Mountains for a day of snowboarding. Ignoring warnings about an impending storm, he embarks on this adventure, only to find himself quickly locked out of his cabin after stepping outside for a moment. In a desperate attempt to get back inside, he breaks down the door, injuring himself in the process. This marks the beginning of an increasingly perilous journey.

In a chance encounter, Eric meets Sarah Dumont, who educates him on winter survival tips, particularly emphasizing the dangers of eating snow that can lead to severe dehydration. As a mountain operations risk manager, she tries to warn him of the storm approaching, but Eric, caught up in his reckless behavior, brushes aside her concerns and chooses to proceed with his snowboarding run—ignoring mountain regulations and the risky conditions.

As the storm descends, the forecast by Austin R. Grant, the weatherman predicting two to three feet of snow, becomes a grim reality. Eric’s recklessness leads him deeper into the mountain where he loses his sense of direction as visibility drops to absolute zero. With his phone left useless due to lack of service, he seeks refuge under the trees, battling increasingly severe conditions including icy winds and relentless snowfall.

On the second day, Eric has an encounter with nature as he confronts a wolf, showcasing both his fear and determination as he uses his instincts to survive. Despite finding temporary shelter, the elements take their toll, and as he absorbs the reality of his situation, he reflects on lessons from his past, including advice from his father, Jason Cottle, who taught him the value of perseverance. As the days progress, Eric suffers from the harsh realities of survival, including desperate measures to stay alive, such as consuming his own flesh due to the dire circumstances and severe leg infection that threatens his life.

Meanwhile, the concern of his mother, Susan, intensifies as the critical seventh day approaches—she realizes Eric hasn’t checked in and urges search and rescue efforts led by Sarah. The two race against time as they pair their efforts to locate Eric, whose chances of survival dwindle with each passing hour. Their search efforts are complicated by the unforgiving weather and Eric’s well-hidden location beneath a canopy of trees, turning the rescue into a near-impossible task.

As the eighth day dawns, Eric’s resolve hardens, fueled by the memories of his past failures and the pressure of his life-and-death situation. In a moment of sheer determination, he manages to reach the top of a hill, recording a message for his mother just before the remaining battery on his location device dies.

Ultimately, his signal is picked up just in time, prompting Sarah and her team to rush to find him, resulting in a bittersweet rescue. The ordeal leaves Eric with severe frostbite that necessitates the loss of both his legs, yet he emerges from this harrowing experience with a new perspective on life. His journey leads him to a fresh start, where, one year later, Eric returns to snowboarding on the same mountain, now drug-free, coaching a junior ice hockey team while living a fulfilling life with his wife and two sons in Southern California. Through every ordeal, Eric’s story stands as a testament to resilience, highlighting the human spirit’s capacity to endure even the harshest of trials.
