Diamonds are found in remote, impoverished regions of Africa, where poor miners extract them from the earth. These precious stones are cleaned and then passed through several traders who assess their value. Once graded, the diamonds are polished, but many end up sequestered in the vaults of major diamond corporations. These corporations aim to control supply and maintain the exclusive status and high prices of their products.
The narrative begins with a reporter named Cassie, who is on a mission to interview Miss Laura Quinn, the first female manager of the London Diamond Corporation. This interview supposedly aims to feature women from the 1950s and 1960s entering the workforce. During the interview, Quinn, now an elderly woman, reveals a box containing a spectacular 168-carat diamond and provocatively states, “I stole it.” Cassie is immediately captivated, assuming that Quinn had spent years in prison for this audacious theft.
The story then shifts back to 1960, when Quinn was a hardworking manager at the London Diamond Corporation. Always the first to arrive and the last to leave, she finds herself consistently overlooked for promotions despite her superior intellect compared to her male colleagues. Quinn understands the intricate geopolitics surrounding diamond trading and candidly expresses her opinions at company meetings. Unfortunately, her insights are dismissed by the President, Milton Kendrick Ashtoncroft, primarily because of her gender. Determined, Quinn resolves to work even harder to prove herself.
As the tension rises, Quinn learns that her position is in jeopardy from janitor Hobbs, who shares that the President secretly admires her suggestions, yet the male-dominated establishment refuses to recognize her contributions. Upon discovering a termination letter in her personnel file, she approaches Harold, a classmate from Oxford who reluctantly informs her that due to conflicts of interest, he cannot offer her a job, as the corporation is spreading damaging rumors about her professionalism.
In a twist of fate, Hobbs proposes a perilous plan for a heist, suggesting they steal diamonds discreetly to secure their wealth without raising suspicion. Aware that her remaining options are dwindling due to workplace ageism, Quinn consents to the scheme. The vault access codes are crucial, and while they initially seem secure, Hobbs speculates that they may be hidden in a more accessible location than previously thought.
At a social function hosted by the company president, Quinn seizes the opportunity to locate the vault combination. While searching, she witnesses MKA opening his safe, leading her to eventually retrieve the codes post-event. Together with Hobbs, they develop a strategy to exploit vulnerabilities in the security system. In an unexpected outcome, Hobbs successfully absconds with an extraordinary haul of nearly two tons of diamonds, demanding a ransom of 100 million pounds from the insurance syndicate, effectively placing them in a precarious financial situation.
As the plot thickens, the corporation hires a private investigator, Mr. Finch, who becomes suspicious of both Hobbs and Quinn. To dodge potential capture and imprisonment, Quinn attempts to give the diamonds back, yet Hobbs refuses to cooperate, leading to a complex game of cat and mouse, all while Quinn continues to assist Finch with his investigation.
The situation culminates in a crisis when the theft becomes public knowledge, causing the company president to suffer a heart attack from stress. Overwhelmed with anxiety while out drinking with Finch, Quinn finds herself in the restroom, tears streaming down her face after losing a diamond earring down the drain, which sparks an idea about the heist and the whereabouts of the diamonds.
After a brief conversation, she secretly navigates the sewer system beneath the corporation and encounters Hobbs. Tension escalates as he confronts her with a gun; however, the unexpected revelation follows as he confesses his disdain for the diamonds and his only desire to destroy the insurance head, whose negligence led to his wife’s tragic death long ago.
Ultimately, the ransom is paid, leading to devastating consequences for the insurance chief. As the dust settles, Quinn calls Finch, claiming she followed a hunch leading to the remaining diamonds. Finch, while emotionally entangled with Quinn, decides not to press charges against her due to a lack of solid evidence linking her to the heist. The company retrieves the stolen diamonds and discreetly lets it be known that the theft was merely a rumor.
Returning to the present, Quinn informs Cassie about her resignation and reveals that she received a letter from a Swiss bank. Hobbs expresses remorse for dragging her into his plan, compensating her with the ransom money. She concludes her tale by sharing how she chose to donate her unspent gains to various organizations and individuals in need, using her experience to give back to the community and support those less fortunate.
