Seven Thieves

A discredited expatriate American professor, Theo Wilkins, has called on a young protégé and sophisticated thief, Paul Mason, to come over from the United States to the south of France for one final heist. Wilkins has assembled a tight, loyal team for a daring job, including Melanie, an exotic dancer, Melanie, and a skilled safecracker, Louis Antonizzi. An inside man at the casino, the meek Le May, helps secure invitations while the plan unfolds under the watchful eye of the casino’s authority, the Director of Casino. The target is immense: 4,000,000 francs secreted in the underground vault of Monte Carlo’s famed casino, and Wilkins believes he can pull it off with the right balance of nerve, timing, and loyalty.

On the night of a grand celebration, Pancho, the saxophonist, and Wilkins slip into the casino in disguises—Pancho as the wheelchair-bound aristocrat Baron von Roelitz and Wilkins as his physician, Dr. Vidal. Melanie, the safecracker Louis, and Mason attend the party with invitations secured by the insider, while Le May works behind the scenes to keep the ruse intact. The plan hinges on a perilous ledge maneuver: Mason and Louis slip out a window that Melanie has opened, trek along the narrow ledge high above the sea, and reach the director’s office. From there they descend four floors to the vault, cut through a barred gate, drill the lock, seize the cash, and return to the director’s elevator, fighting off the casino’s watchful gaze at every step.

Meanwhile, Pancho’s role is to feign a cyanide heart attack, a ruse that falters when he balks at taking the poison. Wilkins steps in, injecting him and facilitating the dramatic moment as the director is drawn into a quiet ruse, believing the baron is dead and that discreet handling is needed. They stash the money in the hollow seat of the baron’s wheelchair and, with the money secured, Mason and Louis make their way back through the casino and onto the window ledge, narrowly avoiding detection as Melanie reopens the route for their exit. The group exits the scene with Mason and Melanie leaving separately from the others, signaling the success of the ruse and the impending getaway.

The supposed ambulance, driven by Fritz, carries Pancho to a side entrance as the final piece of the plan moves into place. Just as Pancho regains consciousness in the back of the vehicle, Wilkins—smiling with the thrill of what he believes is achieved—dies suddenly. The shock reveals a deeper, more personal truth: Mason learns that Wilkins is his father. With that knowledge, Mason and Melanie choose not to celebrate the money but to rethink their future together, away from the life of crime.

Back at the hideout, the gang squabbles over the split, and Mason examines the cash. He discovers the bills are brand-new and all serial numbers are on file with the Bank of France, making them nearly impossible to spend without trace. Realizing the others are not bound by the same caution, Mason and Melanie plot to reclaim the loot. They take back control and decide to walk away from the treasure, only to stumble into extraordinary luck at the roulette table, where fortune smiles on them. In the end, the two of them—now committed to a life together—emerge as the only members of the crew to come out ahead, leaving the rest of the plan behind as a cautionary tale about trust, greed, and the price of a single bold risk.
