Shin betrayed Kenshiro because he loved Yuria and wanted her for himself. However, Jagi manipulated Shin into this betrayal, persuading him to challenge Kenshiro when there was no law to stop him. After defeating Ken, Shin carved seven wounds on his chest as a symbol of victory and abducted Yuria, taking her to his stronghold in Southern Cross.

Earlier in the story, Shin is introduced as a former ally who confronts Kenshiro and openly declares his love for Yuria.

Raoh killed Ryuken because he was jealous that Kenshiro was chosen as the Hokuto Shinken successor instead of him. The plant was a flower grown from a seed Yuria had given Ken as a token of their love. When Lin and Bat entered Raoh's dungeon to rescue Yuria, they brought the plant with them. The plant's presence drew Raoh's attention, leading to Yuria's execution sentence, but it also symbolized the hope and love that Ken and Yuria shared.
