Set in the mid-17th century, when the Manchus conquer the territories of the former Ming Empire and establish the Qing Empire, the wulin—the interconnected world of martial artists—grasps for breath as anti-Qing sentiment swells. In response, the Qing authorities decree a sweeping ban on martial arts for common people, a move that genius, greed, and power-hungry leaders like General Fire-Wind transform into an instrument of oppression and profit. Fire-Wind is ruthless and opportunistic, razing villages and slaughtering resistance fighters, and his next target is Martial Village, a haven for skilled fighters and teachers.

Fu Qingzhu, a retired executioner [Lau Kar-Leung], feels the call to stop this tide of blood. He gathers two young villagers, Han Zhibang [Lu Yi] and Wu Yuanying [Charlie Yeung], and together they trek to Mount Heaven to seek aid from Master Shadow Glow, a reclusive swordsman and sword-forger whose craft is legendary. Master Shadow Glow [Ma Jingwu] grants them a path forward, and with a quiet nod of approval, he entrusts his four apprentices—Chu Zhaonan, Yang Yuncong, Xin Longzi, and Mulang—to accompany the trio on their perilous quest. The apprentices are new faces in the fight: Chu Zhaonan, played by [Donnie Yen]; Yang Yuncong, played by [Leon Lai]; Xin Longzi, played by [Tai Li-Wu]; and Mulang, played by [Duncan Chow]. Together, they forge a bond and set out as a unit to defend Martial Village and confront Fire-Wind’s encroaching darkness.

The group returns to Martial Village as the shadow of war presses in, and they make a stand against Fire-Wind’s forces. Their first victory is hard-won and costly, but it buys precious time for the villagers to prepare for evacuation. In the heat of the raid, Chu Zhaonan encounters Green Pearl, Fire-Wind’s slave girl who has been brought into the circle of danger and intrigue. Green Pearl [Kim So-yeon] joins the Seven Swords on the run, a choice that kindles a fragile, complicated bond between her and Chu, weaving romance into the fabric of treachery and survival. The mood shifts as the group presses into the hills, where the journey becomes a test of trust as well as skill.

As they flee, the caravan is plagued by poisoned food and water, and ominous signs mark their trail for Fire-Wind’s soldiers. The Seven Swords realize there is a spy among them. The suspicion falls on Green Pearl at first, not without reason, because she does not share their language and background, making her an easy target for accusation. The romance between Chu Zhaonan and Green Pearl intensifies the tensions, complicating the mission and clouding judgment. In a trap laid by Fire-Wind’s men, Chu loses his sword and is captured, while Green Pearl fights to escape, her injuries mounting as she sends a final message to the others before she falls.

The remaining six swordsmen race to Fire-Wind’s base to mount a rescue, while the spy’s machinations continue to unravel the village’s defenses. Qiu Luo Dong, a schemer who has slipped into the shadows, lights a fuse by destroying their cave entrance to guide the enemy to the villagers. Liu Jingyi [Jason Pai Piao], the village chief, and his daughter Liu Yufang [Zhang Jingchu] become entangled in the deadly web that unfolds. Liu Jingyi is slain by the conspirator, while Yufang survives only through courage and resilience, a trauma that leaves its mark but also steels her will. The Seven Swords eventually defeat Fire-Wind and force his army to retreat—yet the cost is steep, and the village is left scarred by loss and fear.

Amid the ruin, the Seven Swords face a stark choice: to save the wulin, they must persuade the Qing emperor to lift the ban on martial arts. They press on toward the capital, their resolve tempered by the lives lost and the friendships tested. Han Zhibang stays behind for a time to safeguard the survivors, a promise that weighs heavily on him as Yufang encourages him to rejoin the group and fulfill their shared mission. The path ahead remains perilous and uncertain, but the hope for a freer wulin—a time when martial arts can be practiced openly again—drives them forward, toward the capital and the politics that shaped their fates.

In the end, the tale is not just a battle between swords and soldiers, but a meditation on duty, loyalty, and the heavy price of resistance. It is a story of a village’s courage and the Seven Swords’ vow to defend their people, even as they confront the limits of power and the cost of truth. The bond between Chu Zhaonan and Green Pearl lingers in memory, a reminder that love can emerge in the most unlikely moments, even amid war, secrets, and the shadows of betrayal. And as the fighters head toward the capital, their collective aim remains clear: to lift the yoke of oppression and to preserve the spirit of the wulin for generations to come.
