First Kid (1996) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of First Kid (1996), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In an unexpected twist of fate, Secret Service agent Sam Simms finds himself assigned to protect the President’s rebellious 13-year-old son, Luke Davenport, at the command of his superior, Wilkes. This unconventional responsibility arises after Luke’s defiance causes the replacement of agent Woods, who had treated him poorly in front of the press. While Simms views this role as a career advancement rather than an insult, his early efforts to bond with Luke fall flat.

As Simms grapples with the challenge of connecting with the troubled teenager, Luke’s situation worsens. He faces relentless bullying from a classmate named Rob, and despite being the target, Luke finds himself facing punishment from his parents for his involvement in the conflict. Recognizing the opportunity to form a deeper connection, Simms, who has experience as a boxer, begins to understand Luke’s struggles, recalling his own difficult youth.

Things take a turn when Simms learns about Luke’s anxiety over inviting a girl named Katie to the school dance. With guidance from his Secret Service colleague, Simms helps Luke navigate the complicated waters of teenage romance, culminating in a brave moment when Luke finally asks Katie out. Unfortunately, this sweet chapter is overshadowed when an emergency lockdown is ordered by the Secret Service director, Morton, due to a suspicious duffel bag near the entrance.

In a bold act of rebellion, Simms decides to break the rules and take Luke to the dance. There, they confront Rob again, but this time, Luke surprises everyone by standing up for himself, which fills Simms with pride. However, the fallout from their disobedience is severe: Simms is dismissed from his position and barred from any further contact with Luke.

Feeling abandoned, Luke turns to an internet friend known as Mongoose12, who offers him a chance to escape the confines of the White House and meet at a nearby mall. Unbeknownst to Luke, Mongoose12 is actually former agent Woods, who is scheming to take revenge. With Luke missing, Simms is granted a second chance to protect him. Teaming up with his friend Harold, a paraplegic who runs a spy shop, Simms races to locate Luke, leading to a dramatic showdown at the mall.

As tensions mount between Simms and Woods, it’s clear that Woods’ motives have morphed into something sinister. What began as a plan to return Luke to the President now harbors a dangerous intent to exact revenge on the boy for the mishaps that led to his own career downfall. In a heated moment, Woods threatens Simms with a firearm, but Simms manages to dodge the bullets, countering with an impressive uppercut. Just as reinforcements arrive, Woods makes another attempt to harm Luke, and Simms heroically places himself in harm’s way, resulting in a gunshot wound to his arm. The chaos escalates as Woods is ultimately arrested, facing serious charges including abduction and attempted murder.

In the aftermath of these tumultuous events, Simms is offered a prestigious position within the Presidential protection detail but chooses instead to remain close to Luke. This heartwarming decision nurtures not only their friendship but also opens the door for a potential romance with Luke’s biology teacher, further strengthening their complicated bond as they navigate through the intricacies of their lives together.
