Duncan Fletcher Will Friedle is an average teenager living in suburban Washington, D.C., who, to win a dare from his friends Curtis and Arthur, aims to land a date for the school’s spring dance. On a routine mall trip, he encounters Hallie Richmond Elisabeth Harnois, a girl Duncan doesn’t recognize as the daughter of the President, George Richmond Dabney Coleman. Hallie is secretly dodging the Secret Service after slipping away during her father’s reelection rally, and the moment Duncan asks her to the dance, she accepts, handing him an address that he blissfully assumes is ordinary—only to discover it’s the White House itself.

The president initially hesitates to let Hallie go out because of a fundraiser that night, but he relents after a brief discussion with his wife, First Lady Carol Richmond Mimi Kuzyk. Back home, Duncan’s family buzzes with plans for a big party, and he presses his father, Charles Fletcher Jay Thomas, about borrowing the company car for the big night. When he is refused, Duncan takes the red BMW anyway, and soon finds himself standing in front of the White House, astonished by the reality of who his date really is.

At the White House, Hallie introduces Duncan to her father, who lays out the practical limits of their evening and stresses that the Secret Service will shadow them the entire time. Hallie hopes for a simple dinner and a movie, but their plan quickly veers off course as they attempt to slip away from the agents. The night’s misadventures begin with a dress-up stop at a store called F/X, where Hallie emerges in a pink velour mini-dress and selects an expensive leather jacket for Duncan, signaling the start of a night that will test every rule in the Secret Service playbook.

From there, the pair heads toward Club Alien but must first survive a run of near-disasters. Duncan brags to his friends that he isn’t bluffing about dating the President’s daughter, raising the stakes of their escapade and the bet he’s made. A few unexpected detours punctuate their journey: a traffic-filled detour before they reach their nightclub destination, a tense stop at a biker bar, and a chaotic incident when a crazed couple steals Mr. Fletcher’s car, forcing Hallie and Duncan to improvise once more.

Meanwhile, Hallie learns that Duncan’s bet has stirred up trouble back home. The Secret Service closes in, and the two lovers eventually find themselves pursued by both the agents and Hallie’s own guard. Hallie, frustrated by the bets and the game, distances herself from Duncan and turns toward her nemesis Steve Ellinger Grant Nickalls for companionship, a choice that places her in an uncomfortable predicament as Steve makes unwanted advances. Duncan tracks Steve down to his house, where a tense confrontation unfolds; a fight ensues, and Duncan rescues Hallie, who vents about the night’s chaos and the people who tried to exploit it. To settle the score, Hallie wrecks Steve’s motorcycle, sending a clear message about who she can rely on when danger and pressure mount.

After a fraught night, the couple’s bond strengthens as they share a quiet moment on the Lincoln Memorial steps at sunrise, realizing their feelings for one another run deeper than a mere dare. Hallie returns home with her secrecy intact and a sense of guilt for the trouble she caused, but her parents forgive her, understanding that young love can be messy and dangerous but also meaningful.

Even though Duncan did not attend the dance and the bet ends unresolved in a competitive sense, the night yields a stronger outcome for both families. Duncan’s reputation at school begins to improve as people hear his version of the night’s events, and Mr. Fletcher’s relationship with his boss softens after the car’s impound is resolved. The President arrives at Duncan’s school to thank him for taking Hallie out—an official nod that allows Duncan to continue pursuing a relationship with Hallie. The White House celebrates a quiet victory as well: Mr. Fletcher is buoyed by the goodwill generated, and Hallie and Duncan are given room to explore their budding romance with the Secret Service watching over them in the background. The story closes on a hopeful note, with Duncan and Hallie ready for a second date, their paths now permanently linked by a night neither of them will forget, and with Marine One quietly signaling that the world of politics has, for once, given way to something sweeter and more personal.
