The film opens by introducing Huo Yuanjia, a renowned Chinese martial artist known for his exceptional skills and bravery. He is celebrated for his victories over foreign fighters during a time of significant foreign imperialism in China.

Huo engages in fierce battles against three formidable Western challengers: he defeats a British boxer, a Belgian lancer, and a Spanish fencer. These victories solidify his reputation but also lead to an overwhelming sense of guilt and internal conflict within him.

Haunted by guilt from his victories, Huo embarks on a soul-searching journey, leaving Tianjin to wander without purpose for several months. This period allows him to reflect on the impact of his triumphs and his role as a martial artist.

During his wandering, Huo finds himself in a life-threatening situation and is saved from drowning by Granny Sun and her granddaughter, Yueci. Their compassion deeply impacts Huo, teaching him valuable lessons about mercy and the importance of humanity.

By 1907, Huo returns to a dramatically changed Tianjin, witnessing the city's development and social changes. He seeks to make amends with the family of his deceased friend, Qin, and reconnects with Jinsun, who has become a businessman.

Huo boldly challenges the American wrestler Hercules O'Brien to a match. During their intense fight, Huo demonstrates his character by saving O'Brien from a dangerous situation, which earns him O'Brien's respect and cements his victory.

Following Huo's victories, the foreign chamber of commerce expresses concern over his growing popularity, fearing it could incite anti-foreign sentiments among the Chinese people. Their apprehension underscores the tensions of the time.

Huo embarks on a quest for honor by challenging Tanaka, a skilled martial artist. Their duel features an intense exchange of traditional weapons, highlighting Huo's adaptability and skill, as he wields a sanjiegun against Tanaka’s katana.

Before the final round of his match with Tanaka, Huo unknowingly drinks poisoned tea orchestrated by the foreign chamber's affiliates. The poisoning leads to his collapse, casting a shadow over his otherwise honorable character.

Upon realizing that Huo had shown remarkable restraint and sportsmanship, Tanaka declares him the winner of the match. This moment of respect between the two fighters signifies Huo's virtuous character and his growth throughout the film.

In a poignant epilogue, Huo is seen practicing wushu in a tranquil field, suggesting an eternal connection with his martial arts and the lessons learned. Yueci watches over him, symbolizing hope and redemption, hinting at a metaphorical reunion.
