Emily Meyers, portrayed by Phoebe Dynevor, and Luke Edmunds, played by Alden Ehrenreich, are analysts for One Crest Capital, a ruthless hedge fund located in Manhattan. Their passionate romance is a well-kept secret from their colleagues, including Dax (Brandon Bassir), Rory (Sebastian De Souza), and Arjun (Sia Alipour). When Luke proposes to Emily during his brother’s wedding, she ecstaticly accepts, marking a joyous moment in their relationship.

However, the next day brings unexpected changes to their lives as Emily overhears news about upcoming layoffs. After one of the portfolio managers, Quinn, is let go, she learns that Luke is being considered for the role. Much to their delight, they celebrate this potential advancement, but Emily is soon called into a late-night meeting with the firm’s CEO, Campbell ([Eddie Marsan]), who unexpectedly informs her that she will be receiving the promotion instead. The decision places Emily in a difficult position as she reluctantly shares the news with Luke, who, although supportive, begins to harbor resentment over his own missed opportunity.

As Emily embraces her new responsibilities, the dynamics of their relationship shift. Luke, now under Emily’s authority, finds himself grappling with feelings of frustration as he is assigned numerous tasks, which demand lengthy hours to complete. He becomes drawn into the world of self-help gurus, attempting to reclaim his sense of masculinity amidst the challenges he faces at work. This strain seeps into their intimate life, as illustrated when Emily reaches out for affection, and Luke, burdened and distant, declines her advances.

During an outing with Campbell and Paul ([Rich Sommer]), a senior executive, Emily discovers that Campbell is considering cutting ties with Luke, deeming him ineffective after a significant financial loss he caused the firm. Despite Emily’s efforts to stand by Luke, their situation worsens when another costly mistake escalates tensions, prompting Campbell to lash out at her.

In a desperate bid to support Emily, Luke attempts to share illegal insider information, but she navigates this precarious situation wisely, suggesting another successful trade that earns her a generous commission. The triumph, however, is short-lived, as an ignored celebration spirals into a drunken conflict where Emily’s dress becomes a point of shame for Luke, further deepening the rift between them.

The situation intensifies when Rory is fired, and Luke, feeling desperate, implores Emily for a recommendation, despite her hint that Campbell has no intention of promoting him. Their confrontation unveils a dark turn when Luke crosses a line, leading to a harrowing encounter that leaves Emily deeply traumatized.
