What Happens at the End of F1?

How F1 (2025) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

Sonny Hayes returns to the grid for APXGP in a desperate bid to keep the team alive. After a chaotic start to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Joshua Pearce briefly leads before a pit‑stop drops him to sixth and Sonny’s own car is damaged in a contact with George Russell – the race is red‑flagged. The stoppage allows the crew to replace Sonny’s rear wing and, because the incident is deemed clean, the cars are sent back out.

When the race resumes, APXGP’s two cars sit in third and fourth behind Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, whose soft‑tyre sets are already a few laps old. With fresh soft tyres, Sonny and Joshua have a clear grip advantage. Sonny deliberately slows his own pace, letting Joshua overtake and take the lead. Joshua then collides with Hamilton, eliminating both and handing the lead to Sonny, who steers clear of trouble and crosses the line first. The victory secures the team’s place on the grid and thwarts the board member’s plot to dismantle APXGP.

Even though the win fulfills his redemption, Sonny chooses to step away from Formula 1. He tears up his final paycheck to prevent the team from firing him, then announces his retirement, planning instead to compete in the Baja 1000 off‑road race – the series that once fascinated him. His departure underscores that he races for the love of speed, not for fame or money.

During the season, a tentative romance blossoms between Sonny and the team’s technical director, Kate McKenna. They share a night together, and in the closing moments they promise to stay in touch, leaving their future open but separate for now. The film ends with the team alive, Ruben Cervantes safe as owner, and Sonny driving toward a new, rugged horizon, his love for racing intact.

Ending questions answered

F1 Ending: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about the ending of F1 (2025): what the final scene means, how the twist works, what happens to each character and how to read the ending. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Sonny deliberately slow down and let Joshua overtake him in the final race?

Sonny deliberately slowed his pace to give Joshua a shot at the lead because he recognized the young driver needed the win more than he did at that moment. With fresh soft tires against Hamilton and Leclerc's worn sets, Joshua had the grip advantage to attack, while Sonny was confident he could recover from behind if anything went wrong. It was a mentor's sacrifice, putting his protégé's success ahead of his own ego in the closing laps.

Foreshadowing: Sonny's whole arc as Joshua's mentor, including their earlier clashes over risk-taking and teamwork, sets up this moment where he trusts Joshua with the lead.

Q2

How does Sonny end up winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after letting Joshua pass?

After Sonny let Joshua take the lead, Joshua collided with Lewis Hamilton while attempting an aggressive overtake, eliminating both cars from contention. With the two frontrunners out, Sonny, who had deliberately hung back to avoid the chaos, inherited the lead and crossed the finish line first, delivering APXGP the win that secured the team's future.

Q3

Why does Sonny tear up his final paycheck at the end?

Sonny tears up his paycheck because he refuses to let APXGP use it as a financial excuse to dismiss him. By destroying the payment, he removes the paperwork that would formalize his firing and instead transforms his exit into a voluntary retirement. The act also reinforces that he never raced for the money in the first place.

Foreshadowing: Sonny's earlier indifference to contracts and salary negotiations throughout the season hints at his willingness to walk away on his own terms.

Q4

Why does Sonny retire from Formula 1 to race the Baja 1000 instead?

Sonny chooses the Baja 1000 because his love for racing was never really about Formula 1, it was about speed, danger, and the raw challenge of driving. The Baja represents the kind of unfiltered, off-road motorsport that originally fascinated him, and retiring from F1 after a championship-winning season lets him chase that original passion rather than continue in a sport he's already conquered.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes of Sonny reminiscing about his pre-F1 racing days and his reaction to off-road vehicles foreshadow his desire to return to that world.

Q5

What happens to Joshua after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

Joshua survives the collision with Hamilton and is approached by Mercedes with an offer to drive for them, but he rejects it. His decision to stay with APXGP signals that loyalty to the team and to Sonny's mentorship matters more to him than a faster car or a more prestigious seat. It also cements his growth from a selfish rookie into a team-first driver.

Q6

How does APXGP's win save the team from being dismantled?

The Abu Dhabi victory gives APXGP enough championship points and prize money to remain financially viable on the grid, directly neutralizing the board member's plan to sell off the team. With Ruben Cervantes retaining ownership and the team's competitive future secured, the corporate sabotage plot collapses. The win functions as the single result that validates the entire season's struggle.

Q7

What does the ending mean for Sonny and Kate's relationship?

Sonny and Kate's final promise to stay in touch leaves their romance unresolved but hopeful, neither walks away from what they shared, but neither reshapes their life around it either. Sonny's departure for the Baja 1000 means he'll physically leave her orbit, while Kate remains committed to her role as technical director at APXGP. The open ending suggests their connection survives the distance, even if it doesn't fully converge.

Q8

What was the board member's plot to dismantle APXGP?

A rival board member had been maneuvering throughout the season to force APXGP off the grid by engineering poor results, withholding resources, and positioning the team for a forced sale. The Abu Dhabi victory undermines that strategy by proving the team is both competitive and commercially valuable, removing the justification for dismantling the operation.

Q9

Why was the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix red-flagged and how did it help APXGP?

The race was red-flagged after a chaotic opening sequence that included Joshua briefly leading, a pit-stop error dropping him to sixth, and contact with George Russell damaging Sonny's rear wing. The stoppage gave the APXGP crew time to replace Sonny's wing, and because the contact was ruled a clean racing incident, both APXGP cars were sent back out with their positions intact. The red flag essentially reset the race in APXGP's favor.

Q10

What does Sonny's ending reveal about why he really races?

Sonny's decision to walk away from Formula 1 immediately after winning reveals that the victory was about self-validation, not about pursuing more championships or wealth. By refusing to cash his check and choosing the Baja 1000 instead, he demonstrates that his motivation was always the act of driving itself, not the trophies, fame, or contracts attached to it. The ending reframes his entire comeback as a personal closing of a circle rather than a career launchpad.

Foreshadowing: Sonny's recurring dismissiveness toward sponsorships, media appearances, and contract negotiations throughout the season foreshadows his indifference to the business side of racing.

Q11

Is the ending of F1 happy or bittersweet?

The ending of F1 is bittersweet, APXGP survives, Sonny wins the race, and Joshua chooses loyalty over a better seat, but Sonny immediately departs Formula 1 for the Baja 1000, leaving Kate, the team, and the sport he just conquered. The triumph is real, but it carries the quiet sadness of a man who proved his point and had nothing left to prove.
