The Last Whistle

The film begins with Shelly Gardner (Pamela Anderson) nervously preparing for an audition. She lies about her age and gets ready to showcase her talent through a lively song-and-dance performance. For the past 38 years, Shelly has graced the stage of Le Razzle Dazzle, a spectacular revue in Las Vegas. She has cultivated a deep bond with Annette (Jamie Lee Curtis), a much older former showgirl, along with two younger performers, Mary-Anne (Brenda Song) and Jodie (Kiernan Shipka), who view Shelly as a maternal figure. The talented ensemble also shares camaraderie with Eddie (Dave Bautista), the show’s DJ and producer.

One fateful evening, as the ladies gather for a girls’ night, Eddie arrives at Shelly’s home with heartbreaking news. Muffy, the casino owner, has chosen to shut down their beloved show due to dwindling ticket sales. With just two weeks left until their final curtain call, Shelly is devastated.

The impending closure of Le Razzle Dazzle leaves Shelly at a loss. With no robust fallback plans, she feels increasingly trapped. Annette, facing her own battles of alcoholism and financial instability, copes poorly, while Mary-Anne and Jodie try their luck auditioning for other productions, albeit ones that Shelly dismisses as “too vulgar.” She holds a firm belief that Le Razzle Dazzle offers something far more meaningful than the new “sexier” shows.

In her personal life, Shelly attempts to mend her relationship with her estranged daughter Hannah (Billie Lourd). After leaving a somewhat awkward voice message, Hannah decides to visit, leading to an awkward but tentative reunion where the two engage in lighthearted kitchen antics. However, the air thickens with tension when Hannah maintains a distant demeanor, addressing Shelly by her name instead of “mom.” A budding photographer, Hannah is finding her own path and even has her own show that Jodie attends.

Following a performance, Shelly confronts a bitter truth when Hannah admits to finding the show to be a “stupid nudie show,” one that overshadowed her upbringing. Their confrontation escalates, leading Hannah to storm out, although she shares a brief, revealing encounter with Eddie, who wishes her well.

The struggles amid the female performers intensify. Jodie reaches out to Shelly one night after feeling abandoned by her own family, but Shelly, overwhelmed by her responsibilities, turns her away. This rejection leaves Jodie feeling increasingly isolated, especially when she rebuffs Shelly’s plea for help during a chaotic moment at the theater. A mishap causes Shelly’s costume to get caught, leading to an embarrassing fall that leaves her emotionally shattered.

Later, during dinner with Eddie, Shelly voices her fears about an uncertain future. The conversation takes a shocking turn when Eddie casually mentions that he has seen Hannah. Shelly’s anger boils over as she unearths the truth: Eddie is Hannah’s absentee father, which leads to a passionate outburst about the unfair challenges women face in the entertainment industry.

As Shelly navigates her own struggles, she also learns about Annette’s dire living situation, prompting her to offer refuge. Throughout these turbulent times, Shelly returns to the audition from the film’s beginning, only to be abruptly dismissed by the director who says they are looking for someone “younger and sexier.” In a fit of frustration, she storms offstage, unaware that she is not only confronting an industry that has moved on but also an internal battle regarding her worth as an artist.

Seeking to mend her relationship with Hannah once more, Shelly apologizes for her shortcomings as a mother. The final performance of Le Razzle Dazzle arrives, filled with bittersweet emotions as Shelly shares a toast with her colleagues. Having decided to attend Hannah’s graduation, she pledges to turn her life around. As the show progresses, the crowd’s energy builds, and amidst the applause, there’s a fleeting moment when Hannah seems to appear, calling Shelly “mom” for the first time before vanishing. This climactic performance reveals Shelly’s unwavering resilience and her journey of rediscovery, culminating in an emotional farewell to an era of her life.
