Sara Wulf is a former Special Forces soldier who served in Afghanistan until 2017 and was the only survivor of a deadly ambush that killed eight soldiers. Her traumatic experience marks her past and influences her mental state later in the story. She visits the U.S. consulate in Frankfurt with her young son Joshua to apply for a work visa.

While Sara is at the consulate, she leaves her son in a playroom. When she returns, she discovers that Joshua is missing. She immediately questions security and staff, but they confirm no child was checked in and surveillance footage shows only Sara alone.

Sara contacts the German police for assistance, but they have no jurisdiction over American territory. Her mother, Anja, doubts her, suspecting she is experiencing a PTSD episode and appears to dismiss her concerns about her missing son.

Deemed mentally unstable, Sara is asked to leave the consulate but instead hides inside the building. She searches for her son and encounters Irina, a woman held captive for two months, who offers to help Sara find Joshua in exchange for assistance in escaping the consulate.

Sara uncovers a bag of illegal drugs in an employee's locker, which leads her to suspect that Joshua may have witnessed a drug transaction and was kidnapped as a consequence. Security personnel locate Sara, and she is sedated by security officer Kynch to be subdued.

Sara awakens to find herself at the bedside of Consul General Deborah Allen. She learns about Kira Volkova, a woman held captive for two months, who seeks to leave the consulate to expose Russian dissident activities. Kira plans to go to Boston and share incriminating information.

Kira, who fled Belarus and was brought to Frankfurt by the CIA, wants to go to the US to reveal Russian government crimes. She plans to share data on a USB stick to help other dissidents, and offers to help Sara if she can escape the consulate.

Sara uncovers that security officer Kynch is behind her kidnapping and the fake offer of a security job. She finds evidence that Kynch was involved in the Afghanistan ambush and was responsible for kidnapping her son to manipulate her emotionally.

Sara exposes Kynch's corruption, recording his confession on Aileen’s digital recorder. She then kidnaps Kynch's daughter, Aileen, as a bargaining tool for her son's safety, initially attempting to trade her for Joshua but ultimately deciding to release her.

Kynch shoots Sara in a desperate attempt to silence her, but she manages to rescue her son. Sara's injuries mark the climax of her struggle against Kynch’s plan, and Joshua is finally freed. Kynch's involvement begins to unravel as evidence and confessions surface.

Kynch is taken into custody in the US, and Sara, now injured, plans her departure with Joshua. She contacts Kira to inform her that Kynch is in custody. Sara prepares to travel to meet Kira in the US, leaving her ordeal behind and seeking a fresh start.
