The ending of The Expendables 4 reveals that Barney Ross is very much alive, despite appearing to have died in a fiery crash early in the film. The body that was found was actually that of Jumbo Shrimp, a man Barney had kidnapped and disguised as himself, effectively faking his death to go off the grid. Barney then parachutes away from the crash, ensuring his escape remains a secret. Throughout the film, the mystery surrounding the villain Ocelot is unraveled, exposing Marsh, a CIA agent who previously worked with Barney. Marsh’s plan was to ignite World War III by setting off a nuclear bomb in Russia and framing America, motivated by his belief that chaos would inevitably benefit someone financially. As Ocelot, Marsh had been orchestrating these events, and his true identity is finally exposed in the climax.

Meanwhile, Lee Christmas, who was supposed to escape on a boat, makes a self-sacrificing decision to stay on an aircraft carrier in order to prevent the nuclear threat from reaching Russia, nearly sacrificing himself in the process. Barney’s return allows him to save Christmas and eliminate Ocelot by killing Marsh. Yet, Rahmat, the antagonist, manages to escape injury during the chaotic final fight, leaving his fate uncertain—though he is likely dead given the destruction of the ship and the nuclear device.

In the film’s closing moments, Barney explains his deception to Christmas, revealing his body double and his deliberate disappearance. The story closes with the team regrouping at a bar, celebrating Barney’s resilience and hinting that more adventures are possible in future installments. Although there’s no formal setup for a sequel, the ending leaves the door open, focusing on the characters’ continued camaraderie and the potential for new threats or team members to join the franchise down the line.
