Jamie 'Jim' Graham thrives in a sheltered life within the Shanghai International Settlement during World War II. Unbeknownst to him, Japan's invasion of China is about to disrupt the tranquility of his existence.

As the occupation intensifies, Jim's family makes the difficult decision to evacuate amidst the chaos. Left behind in their abandoned home, Jim naively awaits their return while struggling to survive alone and scavenging for food.

In a desperate attempt to find safety, Jim tries to surrender to passing Japanese soldiers. However, he is dismissed and finds himself forced to navigate the dangerous and isolating world on his own.

While scavenging for food, Jim encounters Basie and Frank, two American expatriates. Although they initially consider leaving him behind, Jim's resourcefulness and persuasion convince them to align with him for survival.

While exploring, the trio unwittingly stumbles into Jim's family home, which is now occupied by Japanese troops. This chance encounter leads to their capture and subsequent transport to a civilian assembly center.

The captured group is moved to an internment camp in Suzhou. In this challenging environment, Jim finds purpose and resilience, creating a trading network to exchange goods even with the camp's commander.

Jim forms a crucial father-son bond with Dr. Rawlins, the camp's British physician. This relationship becomes an essential lifeline for Jim, providing emotional support amid the brutal conditions of the camp.

As 1945 approaches and the war nears its climax, chaos erupts at the camp when American fighter planes launch an attack. Overwhelmed by despair, Jim collapses as he reflects on his feelings of loss and isolation.

In the midst of war, Jim forms an unlikely friendship with a young Japanese trainee pilot preparing for kamikaze missions. This bond represents a fleeting moment of connection amidst the horrors surrounding them.

The internment camp’s prisoners embark on a harrowing journey, leading them to a large football stadium near Nantao. There, they confront the harsh realities of war's impact on the remnants of their once-vibrant lives.

At the stadium, Jim finds fleeting comfort in his parents' beloved Packard car and spends a poignant night with Mrs. Victor. Tragically, this moment of warmth is short-lived as Mrs. Victor meets a bleak fate soon after.

Back in the Suzhou camp, rumors of Japan's surrender begin to spread. Jim encounters a disillusioned Japanese teenager who offers him a mango as a peace gesture shortly before the young man prepares for his ultimate sacrifice.

The arrival of Basie and armed Americans leads to chaos in the camp. In a tragic turn of events, a misguided shot kills the Japanese youth, extinguishing any hope for peace and leaving Jim engulfed in sorrow.

Eventually, Jim is placed under the care of American soldiers and finds himself in an orphanage. Although he reunites with his long-lost parents, the trauma from the war renders him unable to fully recognize or connect with them.

The brutal experiences of war leave Jim psychologically altered. He grapples with the haunting memories of loss and displacement, marking the end of a harrowing chapter in his young life that has irrevocably shaped his reality.
