In June 1946 Stalin publicly urges Russian émigrés to return, but the invitation is deadly. When a French ship lands in Odessa, only a physician, his French wife and their children avoid execution or prison. They are sent to Kiev, where she longs to flee back to France while he knows they are essentially captives, forcing them to watch every move.
