In the sun-drenched San Fernando Valley, Valerie Gail (portrayed by Geena Davis), a manicurist at the Curl Up & Dye salon, navigates the murky waters of a stagnant love life with her uninspiring fiancé, Dr. Ted Gallagher. Seeking comfort and inspiration, she turns to her confidante, Candy Pink, the salon’s manager who brings a fresh perspective to Valerie’s world. With her spirits lifted, Valerie attempts to rekindle the flame with Ted, but her hopes are swiftly dashed when he arrives home with a nurse, revealing his heart lies elsewhere. This emotional upheaval leads Valerie to cast Ted aside in a fit of rage and heartbreak, determined to reclaim her life.

Amidst Valerie’s struggles, far away on the planet Jhazalla, three furry beings—Mac, Zeebo, and Wiploc—yearn for companionship, setting off a chaotic set of events that will intertwine their fates with hers. Drawn to a broadcast showcasing human women and their hairless forms, the aliens inadvertently crash their spacecraft into Valerie’s pool while she enjoys a sunny day. Initially terrified, her curiosity wins out, and she invites the quirky trio into her home, even calling her easy-going friend Woody to repair the damage.

As Ted makes several attempts to reconnect with Valerie, hoping to win her back, she decides to take her new alien friends to the salon for an image makeover. Candy Pink is initially hesitant but ultimately assists the aliens in shedding their fur, allowing them to blend into the human world. Their transformation proves a success as they attract attention at a local nightclub, particularly from Valerie, who finds herself enchanted by Mac’s adventurous spirit.

During this whirlwind, Ted discovers Valerie’s absence and is plunged into a chaotic search for her. He stumbles upon the bizarre situation involving the aliens, whom Valerie claims are MTV contest winners enjoying a weekend with a rock band. Ted’s increasing frustration culminates in a confrontation that drives him to call off their upcoming wedding.

Seeking refuge from the upheaval in her life, Valerie retreats to her bedroom, where Mac finds her and offers a comforting presence, leading to a connection that deepens their bond. Meanwhile, Zeebo and Wiploc become engrossed in working on their spacecraft, only to be invited by Woody to a beach outing. This innocent trip spirals into chaos as they trigger a convenience store holdup and find themselves fleeing from the police in reverse. Realizing his friends are in trouble, Mac intervenes but is captured alongside Woody. Valerie, seizing the moment, devises a plan to pose as a medical professional to join them.

In the midst of a high-speed chase culminating at an emergency room, Ted’s encounter with the aliens fuels his ambition and fantasies of fame. Meanwhile, Valerie and Mac manipulate Ted into believing he’s losing his grip on reality, allowing them to escape disguised as medical staff. They return to Valerie’s house to continue work on the spaceship.

As the chaos calms, Valerie and Ted begin to reconcile, hatching a spontaneous elopement plan for Las Vegas. However, Mac, feeling heartbroken, prepares to bid farewell to his friends. When Ted discovers the spaceship, a frantic attempt ensues to keep him quiet about it. In this moment of clarity, Valerie realizes that true love has always been right beside her—Mac. With renewed determination, they board the spacecraft together and launch into the vast unknown, leaving Earth—and the chaos of their lives—behind.
