Grimsdyke is sacked from his job as a medical officer at a men's prison for misbehaviour with the Governor's daughter. The dismissal leaves him without a clear future and pushes him toward a new role in civilian hospital work.

He is taken on by his old medical tutor, Sir Lancelot Spratt, at St Swithin's Hospital. Spratt is determined to turn him into a successful surgeon.

Grimsdyke discovers a plum senior medical post will soon be vacant and begins scheming to secure it. His cousin Miles tells him the job has already been unofficially offered to him.

Spratt and the newly-appointed hospital matron clash, and Spratt orders Grimsdyke to romance her and soften her up. Grimsdyke reluctantly agrees to carry out the preposterous plan.

The matron misinterprets Grimsdyke's anonymous overtures as coming from Spratt, believing he is her secret admirer. This misunderstanding creates complications for both men.

Grimsdyke has fallen in love with the much younger physiotherapist Jeanine, who thinks he is too old. He tries various methods to look younger and more appealing, but none succeed.

Grimsdyke finally declares his love to Jeanine, but she reveals that she has just become engaged to Lambert Symington. He had previously tried to convince her that she had no feelings for him.

A rejuvenation serum intended for Grimsdyke is accidentally injected into Sir Lancelot Spratt. The mix-up sets the stage for further chaos at the hospital.

Spratt encourages Grimsdyke to release an experimental mood-enhancing gas at a hospital dance. The idea is to boost everyone's mood and let Grimsdyke shine.

At the dance, the combination of substances makes Spratt run amok and he ends up romancing the matron. The episode deepens the hospital's romantic entanglements.

The next day, the matron tells Spratt she is married to her career and resigns to take a post elsewhere. Her departure removes a key obstacle in the hospital's social dynamics.

Grimsdyke is told that the senior medical post has gone to his cousin Miles, and that his own failure was partly because he was seen as too young-looking. This news lifts his mood, as the obstacle seems to have shifted.

The new matron proves equally opposed to Spratt's ideas, so Spratt asks Grimsdyke to intervene. Grimsdyke is happy to help, reasserting his own ambitions under new management.
