Mutiny on the Buses

Stan Butler, Reg Varney a bus driver for the Town & District bus company, is smitten with Susy, Janet Mahoney. His close friend and colleague Jack, Bob Grant, welcomes the news, but Stan’s family—especially his mum, Mrs. Butler, Doris Hare—aren’t thrilled, fearing Stan may move out of the family home. When Arthur, Michael Robbins, loses his job, Stan becomes the main breadwinner for the Butler household, hoping to help Susy find a flat. Yet his plans are complicated by workplace changes at the depot, where a new manager named Mr. Jenkins is brought in to tighten the books and push reforms that some staff view as overbearing. Kevin Brennan brings Mr. Jenkins to life, and his arrival triggers an atmosphere of tension that will ripple through every corner of the depot.

To show resistance to the changes, Stan and Jack stage a cheeky mutiny: the male and female crews wear only the company uniform, eschewing any extra clothing. The stunt doesn’t accomplish much in terms of reforms, but it certainly ruffles Blakey, the inspector, and infuriates Jenkins, who blames Blakey for letting the staff get away with the prank. The clash between the old laid-back culture and the new rules becomes a running thread, dramatized with pratfalls, quick wit, and the kind of chaotic timing that fans expect from the series. Blakey, portrayed by Stephen Lewis, ends up as the focal point of much of the conflict, a man caught between enforcement and the crew’s mischievous camaraderie, and his role grows as the depot’s mood swings from rebellion to reluctant cooperation.

As the weeks pass, Jenkins notices potential new drivers and Stan realizes this could be the chance Arthur has been waiting for to earn a proper wage behind the wheel. To help, Stan takes on the task of teaching Arthur how to drive a bus, hoping to secure him real work that will also keep Susy in reach. The tension at the depot escalates when Jenkins installs a modern radio control system across the fleet, designed to help Blakey make sure buses run on time. Yet the system also tightens the crew’s loyalty to their own rhythms, and Stan and Jack respond with a calculated countermeasure: they tamper with the radio, causing a cross‑band interference that triggers a flurry of misunderstandings involving both the police and air traffic, leading to a temporary halt in the system’s operation.

With the radio chaos resolved, the depot receives a new tool to help with monitoring—the inspector’s new van, provided by Jenkins to improve route oversight. But this order of progress is soon overshadowed by a dramatic incident: a fire at the depot. The firefighting equipment proves woefully inadequate, and the inspector’s van is crushed between two buses as they move to safety. In the aftermath, Jenkins upgrades the firefighting gear and orders Blakey to stage a drill, but the exercise quickly devolves into mayhem when Stan and Jack flood the depot with foam from the new foam machine. Amid the confusion, Arthur’s life outside work becomes a fresh source of pressure for Stan, who learns that Olive, Arthur’s partner, has arrived at the depot and, believing her husband’s falsehoods about the drill, crashes her motorbike into the maintenance pit.

Arthur eventually lands a job at the company, but money remains tight. Stan discovers that simply earning more isn’t enough to secure a flat; the dream of a stable home continues to feel distant until Jenkins reveals a lucrative new possibility: the company plans to run safari tours to Windsor Safari Park, with a designated driver earning a higher wage and keeping the tips. This prospect rekindles Stan’s hope, but Blakey reminds him that the chaos of the recent months has earned him a firm ban from the safari role. The couple’s prospects brighten momentarily when three new clippies arrive at the depot, including one named Gloria, Jan Rennison, who is slated to ride on Stan’s bus. The tension among the men and women at the depot becomes a new chessboard of alliances and rivalry as the safari dream hangs in the balance.

Meanwhile, Stan and Jack attend a darts competition in the busmen’s canteen, where talk of the safari job intensifies. Olive’s offbeat confrontations with Arthur’s clippie, Norah, Pat Ashton—who is flirting with Arthur and drawing attention away from Olive—add a personal layer of drama to the workplace chaos. The situation deepens when Stan and Jack discover Jenkins’s affair with Norah and decide to use that information to blackmail him into giving Stan the safari job, much to Blakey’s astonishment. The power dynamics shift as private indiscretions collide with professional ambitions, and the depot becomes a stage for scheming, pranks, and shifting loyalties.

A few days later, Stan prepares for the trial run to Windsor Safari Park. He’s delighted with his new uniform and the promised safari bus, but the trip turns into a catastrophe when he damages the rear emergency exit, leaving him and Blakey stranded in a dangerous encounter with the lions and monkeys. The failed test becomes a turning point in Stan’s personal life as well: he invites Susy to his family’s house for tea to talk things through, only to face the revelation that Olive is pregnant again and Susy, feeling undervalued and ignored, storms out, returning the engagement ring to Stan. The next day brings more upheaval: Jenkins’s wife has learned of his affair, and he is transferred to another depot. Blakey is demoted to a conductor, a move that feels like a symbolic reprise of the earlier disruptions but also a sign that the hierarchy is adjusting to the new normal.

Three new faces arrive at the depot—one of them Gloria, Jan Rennison—and the mood shifts again as Blakey begins to enforce stiffer control over passenger boarding. The film closes with a moment of déjà vu: Stan, confronted with a familiar sense of chasing a better future, finds himself drawn to Gloria, suggesting that the cycle of flirtation, ambition, and chaos will continue in the next chapter of his life.

In the end, the story remains a buoyant slice of working‑class humor, fusing practical jokes, workplace mishaps, and a hopeful undercurrent about love, loyalty, and the occasional leap of faith.
