Different for Girls (1996) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Different for Girls (1996), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Paul Prentice and Karl / Kim Foyle were close friends in their secondary school days, bound by a protective bond. Paul stood up for Karl when classmates teased him for being different, defending him from repeated attacks and helping him endure the taunts that whispered he was effeminate. The film then shifts forward in time, tracing how their paths cross again in a moment of chance that changes everything.

Years later, a fateful motorcycle ride brings Paul into a cab occupied by Karl, who has undergone a transformation and now lives as Kim Foyle. Paul is startled to learn that Karl has become Kim, yet he works up the courage to ask her out and begin to rebuild their connection. Their first date is awkward, and Kim senses Paul’s nerves about being seen with her in public. Undeterred, Paul brings flowers to Kim’s workplace where she writes greeting-card verses, and they set out again, ending up back at Paul’s place and sharing music that marks a deeper re‑spark between them.

As they spend more time together, Paul teaches Kim how to ride a motorcycle, sharing a growing sense of companionship and mutual curiosity. Yet the second dinner at Kim’s apartment proves fragile. Paul, grappling with the complexities of Kim’s identity, drinks too much and ends up outside in the courtyard. He experiences a confrontational moment that leads to an arrest for indecent exposure, while Kim is taken into custody for obstruction when a police officer pushes back against her efforts to defend him. In the police van, the officers’ crude remarks about Kim escalate the tension, and Paul steps in, incurring a beating from one of the officers.

At the police station, Paul faces assault charges, and Kim’s fear of trouble keeps her from testifying. She flees to her sister’s home, a decision that weighs heavily on both of them. The courtroom becomes a turning point: Kim musters the courage to testify for Paul, and while he is convicted, the penalty is only a token fine. A reporter at the courthouse tries to pry their story free, but they refuse to sell out one another.

Back at Kim’s place, the relationship takes another turn. Paul discovers a surprising level of sexual and emotional compatibility with Kim, and the two share a moment of closeness that reaffirms their bond. Yet money becomes a new pressure as Paul, pressed by financial strain after the motorcycle’s repossession, sells their story to a London tabloid. The sensationalized coverage threatens Kim’s job, but her employer stands by her, lending support rather than punishment.

As the screenplay draws to a close, the audience learns that Kim and Paul have built a life together. The romance has endured not just as a private connection but as a joint decision to face the public gaze. It was Kim’s idea for Paul to monetize their story, a choice that underscores the complicated mix of love, resilience, and the sometimes brutal glare of the press. The final image confirms that they are living together, continuing to navigate the world as a couple who have chosen each other despite the odds.
