As McClane and Carver regroup with the NYPD, they are soon joined by FBI and CIA agents who unveil to them the chilling truth about their cunning adversary: he is none other than Peter Krieg, a merciless former National People's Army colonel, also known as Simon Peter Gruber—the brother of Hans Gruber, a notorious foe McClane had previously bested in Los Angeles.
Simon's elaborate schemes take a darker turn as he proceeds to contact the NYPD once more, warning them of a bomb planted in a city elementary school. He offers to reveal the school’s location but sets the stakes high, asserting that any attempts to evacuate will trigger the bomb's detonation. With this realization, McClane focuses on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Building, uncovering that Simon's crew has executed a theft of $140 billion in gold bullion using dump trucks.
While Carver continues to navigate the labyrinth of Simon's challenges, McClane boldly follows the trio of thieves into a water tunnel, intent on thwarting their audacious heist. Just as the tunnel's cofferdam explodes, releasing a torrent of water, it appears Simon's machinations are beginning to unravel. Nevertheless, McClane manages to escape the unfolding disaster and reunites with Carver. A thrilling car chase ensues, and the duo cleverly evades Simon's henchmen, only to uncover a shocking twist: each of the henchmen had just enough cash to cover a bridge toll, hinting at Simon's sinister ulterior motives.
