In the wake of a sudden and mysterious blackout at the FBI Cyber Division headquarters, Deputy Director Miguel Bowman swiftly mobilizes local law enforcement across the nation to capture top-tier computer hackers. Enter NYPD Detective John McClane, who is called upon to retrieve Matthew Farrell in New Jersey. However, upon McClane’s arrival, they are quickly ambushed by assassins hired by the infamous cyberterrorist leader, Thomas Gabriel. Despite being significantly outnumbered, McClane and Farrell manage a narrow escape.

As they make their way to Washington D.C., Farrell shares that he had been working on an algorithm designed to breach a security system with good intentions. Meanwhile, Gabriel sends a chilling ultimatum to the U.S. government while executing a coordinated takeover of transportation grids and the stock market nationwide. Farrell realizes the gravity of the situation: this is a “fire sale,” a cyber assault meticulously crafted to cripple the nation’s infrastructure.

As they near the DHS headquarters, they face another deadly challenge as Mai Linh, disguised as a dispatcher, lures them into a helicopter ambush. With sheer determination, McClane battles the attackers and brings the helicopter down in flames.

Continuing their journey, Farrell cautions McClane about Gabriel’s next move—targeting the nation’s power grid. They set their sights on a utility superstation in West Virginia, but to their horror, they find it under Linh’s control. In an explosive showdown, McClane and Farrell confront Linh’s team, culminating in McClane extracting a brutal vengeance by sending Linh’s vehicle plummeting from an elevator shaft, resulting in a fiery explosion.

As Farrell attempts to mitigate the damage by hacking into the hub computer, he successfully traces Gabriel’s digital footprint and sends his image to Bowman. It is here that McClane uncovers a harrowing truth: Bowman and Gabriel had previously collaborated at the Department of Defense, where Gabriel served as a chief programmer for security infrastructure. Ignored and fired for his unconventional methods, Gabriel’s resentment brewed into a fierce desire for revenge, a motive that now threatens the entire nation.

Following Linh’s death, Gabriel sets natural gas pipelines on a collision course with the superstation, aiming to eliminate McClane and Farrell once and for all. They narrowly escape as a massive blackout darkens the Eastern Seaboard. Not one to back down, McClane and Farrell head to Baltimore, seeking the expertise of renowned hacker Frederick “Warlock” Kaludis. Warlock analyzes the code Farrell had prepared for Linh, discovering that it acts as a key to gain access to a Social Security Administration building in Woodlawn, Maryland. By following a series of digital clues, Warlock tracks Gabriel’s location.

As they unravel the layers of this complex web, they learn that the Woodlawn facility holds more than just records; it’s an NSA hub designed by Gabriel specifically to secure personal and financial data from cyber threats. With the FBI blindsided, Gabriel seizes the opportunity to hack into the system, gathering sensitive financial information while simultaneously tracking down McClane’s estranged daughter, Lucy, whom he swiftly abducts. This shocking turn of events sets McClane and Gabriel on a collision course, where McClane utters a foreboding warning: > “You will lose.”

Undeterred, McClane and Farrell dive headfirst into danger, aiming to infiltrate the Woodlawn facility and thwart Gabriel’s malicious schemes before it’s too late. After finally breaching the main server, Farrell moves quickly to encrypt the vulnerable data. However, they fall prey to Gabriel’s cunning trap, leading him to kidnap both Farrell and Lucy, compelling McClane to pursue them relentlessly.

As the chase escalates, McClane commandeers their mobile command center and gains access to the F-35B Lightning II’s communication systems. Gabriel orders an aerial assault on McClane’s vehicle, but fate is on McClane’s side as debris brings the jet crashing down. With remarkable resilience, McClane survives and tracks Gabriel to a hangar.

In a high-stakes confrontation, Gabriel pressures Farrell to decrypt stolen financial data. When Farrell stands his ground, Gabriel coldly executes an accomplice, threatening Lucy’s life unless Farrell complies. Just as despair looms, McClane makes a dramatic entrance, dispatching several of Gabriel’s henchmen, but not without paying a price—he is shot by Emerson. In a twist of fate, the bullet meant for McClane meets Gabriel’s chest, effectively putting an end to his nefarious plans. With Emerson dealt with by Farrell’s swift action, the FBI arrives to restore order. In the aftermath, McClane expresses profound gratitude to Farrell for saving Lucy, igniting a romantic possibility between McClane and the young woman.
